The tradition returns! Throughout the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, I will have live updates related to the Flyers. It will be done in chronology. I will do a new post for Day Two tomorrow.
Several members of the Hockey Hot Stove team will be at different Draft headquarters for the decentralized Draft. Sportsology owner and Off the Post podcast co-host is on location at the NHL league hub site in Los Angeles. I will be at the Flyers’ headquarters in Atlantic City, working for the official team website and for Hot Stove from the media workroom near the Flyers’ War Room. Mike Augello will be with the Sabres media contingent at the Buffalo headquarters, working both for The Hockey News (Sabres) and Hockey Hot Stove (Toronto Maple Leafs). Rick Stephens of Rocket Sports Media (Montreal Canadiens focus) will keep a running Draft log of all picks but focus primarily on the Habs.
Mike and I will maintain the running Hot Stove Trade Tracker as deals become official. Also, in addition to Rick’s running Canadiens/league blog, you can find real-time Draft selection updates on our NHL Draft page.
6:55 a.m. EDT — PhiladelphiaFlyers.com Draft Coverage
The media team at the Flyers official website and social media put together a series called “Path to the Draft” across all of the organization’s media platforms. On the website, Brian Smith and I wrote a series of articles to count down to the Draft.
- Smitty wrote a rewind article looking at Matvei Michov’s journey from the 2023 Draft to the NHL All-Rookie team.
- I wrote a 10,000 foot overview of talent assessment practices and the sixth overall pick in 2025.
- A separate article focused on the 22nd and 31st picks, as well as trade-up options.
- Brian and I split up preview articles on prominent centers, defensemen and wingers in this year’s draft (the latter “two” articles will run on Friday as part of the day-long coverage leading into Round One).
- Veteran Flyers scout Mark Greig worked closely with Smitty to provide an overview of the scouting process, the members of the Flyers’ amateur scouting team, and how the internal rankings are crafted. The article, entitled “The Art of the Crystal Ball“, is a quick and informative read for folks interested in the process itself and the people involved.
- The Path the Draft series culminates on Friday with the yearly Meltzer’s Mock Draft. I finished the article last night after tweaking it multiple times over the last couple weeks.
Flyers Daily: June 27, 2025
Flyers Daily host Jason Myrtetus discusses the many variables that will play out tonight during Round One of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft: the player evaluations, the tough looming decisions, players that fit Philly’s needs and those that don’t, plus a lot more. From there, Brian Smith sits down one-on-one with Matvei Michkov and his translator, Flyers skating coach Slav Kuznetsov. (Side note: Michkov hopes to be ready to attempt doing interviews in English over the next year so, once he feels comfortable that he has enough English vocabulary to express what he wants to convey).

Live Snow the Goalie Podcast from outside Flyers War Room
The Snow the Goalie crew (minus Chris Therien, who is attending his daughter’s wedding) will have a live podcast from outside the Flyers Draft War Room. The pod starts at 6:00 p.m. EDT. There will be a variety of special guests during the program including Keith Jones, Dan Hilferty, RIck Tocchet, and various media members. I will be on the air at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
Flyers select Porter Martone with the 6th overall pick
The big Brampton (OHL) right winger is a potential first-line winger. He’s an natural scorer, an underrated setup guy and already physically mature (6-foot-3, 208 pounds). His body and game are far enough advanced that he has already seen time time with Team Canada’s mens’ team at the international level.
Flyers trade up, select Nesbitt 12th overall
The Flyers traded the 22nd and 31st overall picks in order to select big-framed center Jack Nesbitt from the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). The OHL’s Most Improved Player award winner in the annual Coaches’ Poll brings a combination of grit and skill. He did seem to run out of steam a little bit near the end of the season. Nesbitt patterns his game after a combination of Jamie Benn in terms of his playing style.Nesbitt needs work on his skating (as does Martone) but plans to focus heavily on it this offseason.
11:05 p.m. EDT — Briere discusses Martone and Nesbitt
Flyers general manager Daniel Briere spoke with the media near the end of the first round. Briere said the team ideally wanted a center with the sixth overall pick but felt they couldn’t pass up a winger they feel could be a bonafide first-line forward. With Jack Nesbitt, Briere want to make sure the organization grabbed one of the remaining centers they liked. Nesbitt’s so-so U18s made Briere feel like perhaps the Flyers could grab him later, but the scouts’ vibe was that the Windsor center would be gone within the next few picks if the Flyers didn’t move up where they did. I
n regard to the skating deficiencies that are often mentioned with both players, Briere pointed out that Tyson Foerster had bigger question marks about his skating in the 2020 Draft, but he’s turned out fine. Skating coaching and added strength usually takes care of the problem.
ok, a couple good days of hockey stuff
Good morning Bill. Do you know if tickets can be purchased at the door because Ticketmaster keeps giving an error message?
Yes, walkup tickets are available per Flyers PR.
Thanks and fingers crossed for a successful draft for the Flyers!
My dream pick would be Frondell. If we end up with Hagens, I’m ecstatic too. I just don’t want some random pick or a major trade-down – in other words, make this pick please.
Please give us some amazing breaking news today!
Well BPA it was
Do we feel that Forester turned out “fine” with his skating? I haven’t seen improvement.
It has absolutely improved. Has it prevented him from playing effectively in the NHL? No. He gets from point A to point B.
Fantastic 1rst rnd for DB and the Flyers. Love the Martone pick and Nesbitt is a kid you win with. Nesbitt is only scratching the surface about how good he can be. I watched Bob Mackenzies final rankings and he hit on how the kid was named “most improved player” in the O this year….kids still developing… Looking forward to rnd 2….should get 3 more solid prospects.
