It’s nice to actually be excited for draft day for once! Even if nothing happens other than us selecting 11 and 12 I’m pretty stoked. I have my heart pretty much set on Aitchenson with one of the pics so that he can be paired up with Brunnike. Im pretty tore on a forward other than trading up for Martone. I’m still a bit iffy on McQueen if he falls. Not because of the injury, but lack of play time over two huge developmental years but I don’t see him staying on the board long. I guess I’ll hope for the following:

      Martone + Aitcheson
      Obrien + Aitcheson
      Bear + Aitcheson

I want the pens to stop drafting people with skating issues and focus on motor and tenacity, not necessarily just grit and physicality but I’ll take a heap of that too. Hopefully some of the earlier teams make it easy for us to choose.

I’m with you on Aitcheson. I don’t want Jackson Smith, but wouldn’t hate Radim Mrtka.

As for the forward, I’m not high on bear, but I could take a lottery ticket on McQueen. If we move up to take Martone and keep our other first rounder to take Aitch. I’d call this a done deal draft.

As someone mentioned earlier, if we took Chicago’s 3rd and San Jose took Frondell leaving us with Misa… now we are talking.

I also really like everyone’s ability to write these little forum posts.

Yeah I like the ability to write whatever too. I’ll force y’all to listen to me hahaha. I’m not sold on Mrtka. I’ve been reading up on him lots and looking at highlight videos. I think he will be more of a Tyler myers than a Hedman, decent floor but lower ceiling. I’d prefer smith over him. I foresee a slightly better RD version of Pickering. I’d rather swing for the fences so I hope someone eliminates that option for us.

If mcqeen was someone still available you have to take him. It would be a hell of a move to get the #3. As much as any of this top draft pick talk is solely based on sucking, I’m so excited for all the possibilities.

Hearing that pens are interested in mammoth centre Jack Mcbain. Perhaps rakell and 12 for mcbain and 4. This is an e3 from my sources.

Today could be a generational day for the Penguins. Today could be a “we let the players come to us” kind of day. I think Dubas has to be aggressive today and fight for quality over quantity. The longer you let the train off the train tracks, the harder it is to get back on course. If we draft two development guys who are 2-3 years each, you are talking about a pretty long term rebuild that has no promise of success.

Im targeting the #4 pick. Its likely that Misa is there. He’s the kind of guy you go get. It will be expensive, I’d personally move Rakell and Rust for the right deal to attract more assets. Yohe said today he doesnt see a scenario where Dubas moves both 1sts to move up for one pick.

With the #12 pick, I’m letting the first 6-7 picks play out. I have a feeling one of Martone or Hagens falls. I think teams will prioritize center and Hagens seems to be the odd guy out in recent weeks. Moving from 12 to 7/8 wouldnt be as expensive, you could probably do it with our 2nd/3rd picks over the next few years.

I dont want us to pick at 11 and 12 and have Dubas say that they were patient and let the picks fall to them. That’s BS imo. Dont let this team fall into the constant rebuild trap.

You draft two high end guys tonight, likely you are still pretty poor next year. Get these two guys tonight, get a good pick next season, and all of a sudden, you have your next generational core.

Would be sick if they could get no. 9 without trading 11/12. Would give them ammunition to get into the top 5.

Friedman saying rust + one of the firsts for the 9. Is hope there is something damn good in terms of prospects coming back as well otherwise it seems a waste of rust. I’d consider that for the 3,4,5th pick but not 9. Maybe if we got kulich or Byram + dump graves. Or add in a Jarry for Levi. But straight up idk.

Sounds like they are trying to trade Byram. But agreed, no Rust if they want one of those firsts too. Rust + a second or just Rust. Or the 9+ for Rust+1st

I hate this format. The draft in Vegas at the Sphere was one of the cooler off the ice things they’ve done, insane they completely 180’d and moved in this direction. Seems there are a lot of people within the NHL grumbling about it. Doubt it sticks

Dont try to copy other leagues, make it your own. The yearly draft at the Sphere in Vegas would be sick.

Seems Kindel is a pretty polarizing player. Some had him top 10 others had him 20+.

I stand by what I said. I think Dubas wanted a top flight player and he couldnt get it done. Thats disappointing.

I actually like the trade. 12 for 22 and 31? That’s good value.

Kindel played on a line with Tanner Howe in Calgary. Pens scouts had a lot of eyes on Kindel. I’m not really a big fan of the pick personally. I wanted Eklund.

I don’t like trading back either because they could have taken Eklund who has a top 6 potential and with the 22/31 picks.. they’re more than likely going to wind up with bottom 6 guys.

Yea that seems to be his thing. The analytics seem to dictate a lot. Our 11th pick has a much higher % probability of becoming a star in the NHL than I would’ve guessed, but seems like he targets guys being overlooked for size.

Yeah I’m personally not a huge fan with the route Dubas went. I would have much rather had Eklund, but for what it’s worth, TopDown Hockey had Kindel as 8th overall, and most draft people had Zonnon in the mid-20s. Horcoff seemed like a pretty big reach, but he didn’t play a lot at Michigan so TopDown’s model wasn’t very kind to him.

Wish they would have done Eklund Kindel back to back if they were that high on Kindel. Like RW says, bottom 6 guys are a dime a dozen, would have rather swung for guys with higher upside. A lot of comparatives have Kindel compared to Brayden Point so.. hopefully that works out.

Agreed, and hopefully the pros know more than us but I highly doubt even actual scouts can surpass our collective knowledge haha. Bear and Eklund were pretty much unanimously beloved to be higher ranked prospects. Both play relentlessly. Could have had one of them and kindel if they really wanted. Everything done leads me to believe saying he wants Sid back in the playoffs is lip service and we are in some sort of lacklustre rebuild. Don’t know why he would trade down instead of taking the best players available.

I will be watching Eklund and aitchenson on a personal note to see how their careers compare. I think the isles are going to be a frickin nuisance.

I mean Lou def could have screwed the pooch, but they lucked into winning the 1st overall. And what was left at 16 and 17 I think everyone here would have chosen Eklund and aitchenson. A few of off the board picks from 11 to 15 worked out in their favour. Eiserman is supposed to be a pretty beastly sniper. They are going to be a pain to play thanks to their luck.

With Pietrangelo going down… could we swing an EK to Vegas trade?

They probably need cap shenanigans for marner. Wouldn’t mind getting Nicholas Hague from them though, not that we need more LD

I’ve read a few positive reviews on the Pens draft. Pronman gave them a B+. We certainly added a lot of size….which I like.

grinder probably has the biggest boner after that draft. Surprised he hasn’t come in to say some shit about it haha

It’s funny… I wanted the team to get bigger for years just like grinder. However, I wanted those guys to also be good players lol. Jesse Marshall had some good things to say about a few of our draft picks. IMO, he’s one of the best Pens analysts. I have to admit, I was a bit bummed originally with our picks because none of the “insiders” mentioned any of the players we picked. Obviously, it’s such a crap shoot.

Drives me nuts everywhere I read as Eklund being the biggest steal of the draft at 16 ????

Yeah it seems like analysts that do real deep dives into prospects are much higher on our draft than the major talking heads whose job more revolves around surface level stuff about well known names.

As I’ve said all along, I know dick about NHL draft prospects. If I didn’t spend time reading about Martone, McQueen, OBrien, Bear, and Eklund before the draft and just read Marshall’s reviews blind without preconceived biases, I’d be pretty happy with our outcome.
