ParticipantLeave it to Kent Hughes to make a big play on Draft day! Now that we’ve seen how the first round shook out, how is everyone feeling about the trade for Noah Dobson and what the Canadiens had to pay to get him?
(I’ve got some additional thoughts in the article below….)June 28, 2025 at 5:20 pm #13241Garfield

Excellent trade … with David Savard’s retirement. Dobson definitively fills a hole we had on the right side of our defense.
I’m kind of bummed out to see Heineman go as I liked his potential but we had to give to receive … Dobson (25 yrs old RHD) is exactly what the doctor ordered. As for the two 1st round picks (16 & 17), I’m happy HuGo decided to trade them away as it gives us immediate help.
We already have a ton of prospects in the system so a few more (who wouldn’t be ready for years) wouldn’t have helped us at this point. It will be interesting to see what they decide do with Mailloux/Reinbacher (both RHDs) … more trades?

ParticipantThanks for your posts! Dobson was an expensive piece to add, but it does seem that it was the right move given how the rest of the first round played out. Now we just have to wait and see if he can deliver on a Montreal roster! I agree that Heineman has terrific potential, and sorry to see him go, but it was a better asset to move then the likes of Mailloux or Reinbacher – they both need to have a legit chance at cracking the Habs roster before they’re considered as trade chips.
Now to see what Kent can do on free agency day!

ParticipantFunny how things worked out … I was wondering what Hughes would do with our surplus of RHD defensemen, well it turns out that he already had a plan in place.
He killed two bird with one stone: by trading Mailloux he solved our defense surplus and he got us a Heineman replacement in Bolduc.End Result: We got a better defenseman than Mailloux in Dobson and probably a better winger than Heineman in Bolduc.
Win-Win … Hughes is like a chess player who is 5 moves ahead of us fans. -
