The Philadelphia Flyers are not looking to make a big splash in free agency. At least, that’s what I’ve been told by team sources. General manager Daniel Briere is still exploring the trade market and the team will probably sign a free agent or two. However, the Flyers think they are a year away from being in position to go “big game hunting”. That was the word over Draft weekend and is still the case as of this writing. Unsurprisingly, goaltending is one of the main priorities. The team also wants to add a little more size up front, whether at center and/or wing.
Could things change? Certainly. Do I expect a pivot? No, unless there’s a market shift in the next couple days.
Flyers Draftees “Under the Microscope”
Every year during the Draft, I do a pick-by-pick article on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com called “Under the Microscope”. In the past, I’ve done it all in one long article. This year, we broke it up into several smaller segments. This was both to get it posted sooner, and also because of the sheer volume of picks (nine in all) the Flyers made. Feedback is welcomed! If you prefer the bite-sized articles broken up by round, I’m happy to do it that way moving forward. If you prefer the one-stop piece with every pick, that’s doable, too. Meanwhile, here are the links to the 2025 Draft review series:
- Round One: Porter Martone, Jack Nesbitt.
- Round Two: Carter Amadio, Jack Murtagh, Shane Vansaghi.
- Later Rounds (Five and Six): Max Westergard (5th), Luke Vlooswyk (5th), Nathan Quinn (6th).
Each prospect profile is divided into sections: player overview, 2024-25 season performance, usage pattern, strengths, opportunities for improvement, and (if available at the time of writing) a quote from Briere about the player.
Mondays with Meltzer (June 30, 2025)
In this week’s edition of Mondays with Meltzer, Jason Myrtetus and I wrap up the Entry Draft and tie up some loose ends. We discuss what we did and did not enjoy about the weekend. We discuss Trevor Zegras (note: the trade with Anaheim last Monday went down about 45 minutes after we finished recording a podcast from the Alumni Golf fundraiser at Dupont Country Club).
From there, we look ahead to free agency on Tuesday: Flyers needs, with much of the time focused on goaltending. Lastly, we highlight just a couple aspects of the new collective bargaining agreement between the National Hockey League and NHL Players’ Association.

Bill, I think breaking it down into a couple of posts works if one doesn’t have much too much time to hang out and read, which is probably the case for many of us.
And thanks for getting going with HHS. Since you left, HB is of almost zero value any more. The writing is very good, as I would expect from a site run by you. Keep up the great work and I’ll be coming back each day to check in.
Thank you!
I totally agree with you!
I think they need help on D before any help up front although a 4C who can win faceoffs is a need too. The Flyers may as well go to the cap this year as they’ve got $7M+ in dead space going away next year plus the large cap increase. York’s money is a question mark, but it seems they have roughly $9M to work with.
