Quick Hits: Where Things Stand on Free Agent Day

Free agent season opens in the NHL on July 1. The Philadelphia Flyers have approximately $15.14 million of cap space per Puckpedia. aim to make several moves this week. They are looking to fill the following roles:

  • Tandem goaltender or backup to supplement Samuel Ersson.
  • Bottom-six center.
  • Added size to the forward corps. A big winger (preferably one with some scoring touch) is desired.

Flyers qualify free agent York, decline Pelletier

The Flyers issued a qualifying offer to restricted free agent defenseman Cam York on Monday. However, in a somewhat surprising move, Philadelphia declined to tender a qualifying offer to winger Jakob Pelletier, making him an unrestricted free agent. Additionally, the Flyers did not issue qualifying offers to Lehigh Valley Phantoms forwards Elliot Desnoyers or Zayde Wisdom.

The Flyers acquired Pelletier from the Calgary Flames in the deal that sent Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost to Calgary. Pelletier received very sparing ice time under former head coach John Tortorella. However, he moved up in the lineup under former interim coach Brad Shaw, and found some success on a speedy line with Ryan Poehling (now with the Anaheim Ducks) and Owen Tippett.

One would figure that Pelletier’s small frame came into play with the Flyers looking to add size to the wings. The club already has diminutive forward Bobby Brink on the roster and is reportedly in serious pursuit of KHL winger Maxim Shabanov. Shabanov is even smTjealler than Brink. Meanwhile, the Flyers have three defensemen who are below-average size: York, Jamie Drysdale and Emil Andrae.

York does not appear likely to sign an offer sheet with another organization.

Development Camp roster and schedule

The Flyers announced their 2025 Development Camp roster and schedule on Monday. Camp runs from July 2 to July 6. The Fourth of July is an off-day for all players. There will be a scrimmage on the final day. Riley Armstrong and his Player Development staff will run the daily sessions.

  1. 1 big forward, 1 little forward, 1 backup goalie and 1 depth D and a hunting we will go

Vladar is a fine signing, guess the Fedotov experiment is over. Wonder if he just sits in the AHL or goes back to KHL

Dvorak is an odd signing. Its just 1 year and likely a guy to move at the deadline but I just dont see a fit unless Cates or Coots are you 4th line C.

SanFilippo is stating Foerster is going to miss the start of camp with injury however I refuse to believe it until I see it from a reliable source that isnt him

    1. It is confirmed. We knew the general nature — arm injury, worsened recently — for weeks but not exact details.
