The Toronto Maple Leafs were busy for a summer weekday in mid-July, as the club terminated the contract of forward Ty Voit and signed 2024 draft pick Miroslav Holinka to a three-year, entry-level deal.
The 22-year-old Voit had an injury-riddled beginning of his pro career after scoring 105 points with OHL Sarnia in 2023, playing just six games between the ECHL and AHL and suffering two serious shoulder injuries. Last season, the 5’10”, 157 lb. winger played 63 games for the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones and posted 37 points (8 goals, 29 assists).
Voit was in the final year of his rookie contract, and based on his lack of progress to play well enough to climb to the American Hockey League, the Leafs chose to move on a year early and allow the youngster to find a new opportunity.
Toronto also announced the signing of Holinka to his ELC, with an AAV of $918,333 per season. The 19-year-old center was the first of three Maple Leafs fifth-round picks (151st overall) at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas after playing for Czechia at the IIHF Under-18’s in 2023, scoring 20 goals in 29 games for HC Ocelari Trinec juniors and also played 16 games in the top level of the Czechia Extraliga.
Last season, Holinka came to North America and played for the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings, averaging nearly a point-per-game (19 goals, 26 assists in 47 games), and playing for Czechia in the 2025 IIHF World Junior.
The 6’2”, 190 lb. forward is eligible to play in the American Hockey League and with the departure of Alex Steeves, Nick Abruzzese, Fraser Minten, Nikita Grebenkin, and Roni Hirvonen, there will likely be an opportunity for the youngster to get some significant playing time with the Toronto Marlies.
