Team Canada held an intrasquad game — Canada Red vs. Canada White — at the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase (WJSS) on Tuesday. There were some switches from Monday’s practice session. Flyers 2025 first-round pick (and incoming Michigan State freshman) Porter Martone remained on Canada Red’s top line with Berkly Catton. However, top 2026 NHL Draft prospect Gavin McKenna switched to the Canada White side for the scrimmage. Instead, Chicago Blackhawks prespect Sacha Boisvert played left wing on the line.

Additionally, Flyers 2024 second-round pick Spencer Gill played on the Canada Red side in Tuesday’s scrimmage. Previously, he practiced on Team White’s third pairing, teamed with Owen Protz (Montreal Canadiens prospect). On Tuesday, Gill and Cameron Reid (Nashville Predators prospect) comprised the Canada Red third pairing.

Martone wasted little time getting on the scoresheet. Just 3:40 into the first period, Martone assisted on a Michael Hage (Montreal prospect) goal. Throughout the scrimmage, Martone made clever and precise passes. He also played well without the puck (defense and skating are the two main works in progress for the player). However, the big winger didn’t attempt many shots. Subsequently, in the third period, Gill scored a seeing eye goal from the point through traffic.

Ultimately, Canada White prevailed via shootout, 4-3 (1-0). Carson Wetsch netted the winning tally. Martone was unsuccessful on his shootout attempt. On Wednesday, a combined Team Canada roster opposes Finland. Likewise, the USA White and USA Blue squads have been combined into one Team USA group. The Americans will take on Sweden.

Jason also talks about the World Junior Summer Showcase, Porter Martone’s decision to play college hockey. How much input did the Flyers have in the decision to attend Michigan State and forego NHL training camp in September?
