Hockey Canada revealed their roster for the summer camp for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, with 42 players from 20 different NHL clubs. Center John Tavares was the sole player from the Toronto Maple Leafs named, along with two former Leafs.
Tavares, who scored 38 goals in the final year of his seven-year, $77 million contract, has a long history internationally with Team Canada, winning an Olympic Gold Medal in Sochi in 2014, gold at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016, and a pair of World Junior Championship titles in 2008 and 2009.
The 34-year-old was not selected by Canada for the NHL Four Nations Face-Off last February, which likely means that he will be a long shot to make an Olympic roster for the second time. Former Leaf teammates Zach Hyman and Mitch Marner were also selected by Hockey Canada.
Both players are likely shoo-ins for next February, as Hyman’s history playing alongside Connor McDavid with Edmonton and his excellent two-way play will be factors. Marner assisted on McDavid’s golden goal over the US in overtime and is coming off a 102-point career-high last season.
