The Toronto Maple Leafs are taking care of some contractual business in advance of training camp, and announced on Tuesday that they have signed goaltender Dennis Hildeby to a three-year contract extension with an AAV of $841,667.
The 24-year-old was a fourth-round pick of the Leafs in 2022, and after playing a year with Farjestads in the SHL in 2023, came over to North America. In 73 career regular-season AHL games with the Marlies, the Järfälla, Sweden native has a record of 37-21-11 with a 2.53 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage, and six shutouts. Last season, the 6’7″, 224 lb. netminder played in 30 games with the Marlies, posting a 16-9-4 record with a 2.55 goals-against average, .908 save percentage, and two shutouts, and made his NHL debut, starting six games with the Maple Leafs, and posting a 3-3-0 record, with a 3.33 goals-against average and an .878 save percentage.
The deal is a two-way contract for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons, with an AHL salary of $350,000 in year one, and $450,000 in year two, followed by a one-way contract in 2027-28.
Based on the Leafs organizational depth chart, Hildeby is third behind Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz, in the spot that veteran Matt Murray was in last season. He will likely be the first call for GM Brad Treliving, and this deal allows Toronto to have a cost-effective option to be the backup for either Woll or Stolarz down the road. The 24-year-old will share duties with Artur Akhtyamov and Slava Peksa in the AHL this season, but he will have to continue to show progress with the Marlies to stay ahead of the two young Russians on the depth chart.
