In the latest Mondays with Meltzer edition (Sept. 8, 2025) of Flyers Daily, host Jason Myrtetus and I continue the discussion on defining success in 2025-26. If the Flyers have a “successful season” , what’s entailed?

Jason and I agree the 2024-25 campaign fell short of expectations. It wasn’t just that the team missed the playoffs by a much wider margin than the previous year.

Rather, the club finished the year with roughly the same long-term outlook as it started. The organization aims to move into the next phase — adding rather than subtracting pieces. The team added Trevor Zegras this offseason. That’s a potentially important step, but it’s not enough by itself. To get to the next phase, the Flyers roster significant improvement from within.

Keys to a successful Flyers season

Jason wrote a list of categories defining the key factors for success. We then discussed the key players to make it happen. The categories:

  • Biggest positive surprise
  • Most reliable player
  • Pelle Lindbergh Award (most improved player)
  • Top leader
  • Bobby Clarke Trophy race (Team MVP)
  • Barry Ashbee Trophy race (Top Defensemen)
  • Top Forward: offense and all-around
  • Most improved team element (ex. PP, PK, goals for, goals against, save percentage, etc.)
  • Biggest plus of Rick Tocchet and the new coaching staff
