Nelson Trade Complete After Avs Eliminated

Former New York Islanders center Brock Nelson and the Colorado Avalanche were eliminated by the Dallas Stars in Game Seven of their first-round series of the Stanley Cup Playoffs Saturday.

The details of the March 6 trade that sent Nelson to Colorado are now complete.

COL receives: F Brock Nelson, F William Dufour

NYI receives: F Calum Ritchie, 2026 1st round pick, D Oliver Kylington

The Islanders will not receive the conditional 2028 third-round pick since the Avalanche failed to win the Stanley Cup and played in at least 50% of their playoff games. The 33-year-old Nelson had 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in the final 19 games of the regular season for Colorado. He failed to score a goal but had four assists in the seven-game series against the Stars. The haul that the Avalanche gave up with big, without much success.

He will likely head to free agency for the first time in his career on July 1.

Dufour, a 2020 fifth-round pick, will be a restricted free agent. The 23-year-old regressed this season for the Bridgeport Islanders of the AHL, scoring just eight goals in 45 games this season before being sent to the Colorado Eagles, where he had a goal and three assists in 12 games.

Ritchie, the centerpiece for the Islanders in the trade, is set to compete in the OHL Championship for the Oshawa Generals. Ritchie, the 27th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, will get every opportunity in training camp to make the Islanders. The 20-year-old played in seven games with the Avalanche before being returned to juniors. His first and only NHL goal came against the Islanders. Kylington was immediately flipped by the Islanders to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for future considerations. I’d imagine no video tribute at UBS Arena is in his future.
