ParticipantFrom everything I have read about this draft, 1. its not a strong draft and 2. after Schaefer and Misa, just put the players into the ping pong ball machine and take what comes up. Anytime there is not a concensus on players in the top 10, there is a high chance for a team to pick the wrong player, so just have to hope the Flyers pick the right player. But I also think teams like the Flyers and Boston, who are both ready to add players and get back to contention, have a high probability of trading their pciks for established players.

KeymasterIt’s not a strong draft in terms of superstar talent. In fact, there may not be any franchise player types in this Draft. There will be some top-six forwards, top-four D and at least one projected future NHL starting goalie (first-rounder). But there’s no projected franchise player. Depth is OK. The drop off to the point where guys are drafted for one or two high-end traits OR because of physical tools balanced against a very raw current game will probably come a little earlier than other years. There are, however, always the sleepers… maybe even a Jamie Benn in the 4th/5th round if a team gets lucky on the development side.

ParticipantLast year I told Button on his youtube video that he was out of his mind saying the Flyers would pick Luchanko. He was right, I was wrong, and I apologozed. (Not that he ever saw it)
So this time I will not say a word about what he thinks. Martin wasn’t even on my radar before he said this, so I looked him up. He seems like the typical player the Flyers would normally pick, 2 way player, kind of a pest, works hard etc etc etc.
I hope he is wrong.

It is amazing that all these years of being mediocre or flat out horrible the organization still values this “Flyers Way” crap

This is where you are wrong. As Bill said, nothing wrong with depth.

KeymasterCraig, as a former NHL scouting director and GM, has cache within that specialized realm. He has endless contacts. And he’s watching/attending/deconstructing prospect games all year. He isn’t always right, either in his predictions or player assessments. But give him this: He’ll go out on a limb if he feels strongly about something. Doesn’t care if he’s the one outlier or if plays out a totally different way. This is such and inexact “science”. He knows that. But he has his reasons for everything, whether right or wrong (or if it ruffles some feathers).
I have tons of respect for Craig Button and it’s not just because he does the pod once a year with Jason (and me). He loves what he does.

ParticipantBill, I understand Button is a premier expert of these kids, way more than I ever could be. I worry because the Flyers IMO, need to knock it out of the park in this draft, because I honestly don’t think they will be picking this high again for quite a while. My feelings are from this point out they will be drafting in the bubble areas unless they get Islanders level luck, over pay for Kevin Hayes level free agents, open a short term window, then be in cap hell once again. Too much has happened over the years under multiple regimes for me to believe that anything but “Flyers Culture” (whatever that means) will always win out.
Do you believe Brady Martin is that type of “swing for the fences” pick the Flyers need? I am ok with them going off the national draft board if they think they have someone like that, but what I dont want is another safe “200 foot”, typical Flyers type player with a high floor but a not so high ceiling.
Talk me off the ledge.
On another note, I was able to get control of the original MBFlyerfan login which is now connected to my email. Someone had tried to change the password and I got an alert. So when I went in, I was able to change the password but unable to edit the somewhat offensive nickname that account has. I am just not going to use it at all and chalk it up to petty people.

Participantdo the Islanders trade #1 overall to acquire assets and draft hometown boy Hagens? He seems to really want to be there.

Its an interesting exercise. It would reasonably have to be one of the teams picking in the top 4 (MAYBE 5)
San Jose has their own #1 and one from Dallas, as well as 2 #1 (Edmonton) picks next year.
Chicago also has 2 (their own and Toronto) this year and 2 (Florida)next year.
Utah has 1 pick
Nashville has 3 1sts (Tampa, Vegas) this year.

just ignore him. he’s a troll that adds nothing to any discussion.
if I were Briere I’d be at least kicking tires with NY to see what it would take to move to #1. But you’d have to guarantee Hagens will be available at 6 and I’m not sure how you do that unless Briere moves up twice.
