I have only seen some random periods out of the 4 games due to work travel and crappy free online streaming that likes to freeze, so fill me in on early thoughts regarding the coaching staff.

The hot start was nice but this will be a bottom 10 team most likely. We have barely a bottom 6, especially if kindel gets sent down, as well as no NHL caliber LD, and the corpses of 4 aging RD… and brunicke who is gonna make some serious mistakes as he learns. This isn’t a good roster.

Any noticeable differences in the pens structure, forecheck, breakouts, etc? I can’t really remember last year as it’s been too long but I see sully has brought his team game to NY.

One thing I have noticed is muse rolls 4 lines and 3 D pairs. These lesser minutes hopefully help Sid and Geno as the year presses on.

Hopefully Muse starts discussing with Dubas the type of team he wants and we start making trades. Buffalo should be ripe for some strong arming. Not to mention Ken Holland likes to holland.

The defensive structure and pinching is completely reworked and much better. To Grinder’s credit, if we had this coaching in place a few years ago some of our last chance teams might have done way better.

That’s without even getting into how much more rope Muse is giving to younger guys than Sullivan ever did, which is super important right now. I have no reason to think he was a bad hire at this juncture

If muse can do anything with this D corps I’d be impressed. Hopefully we can pick up a young dman from a crowded blue line. Anaheim is a defensive master at drafting. Anyone will be happy to leave buffalo, Montreal might be a bit crowded? With Dobson and Hutson not much room for reinbacher although he seems to be injured often. If Pickering can’t force his way on to the team with this LD that’s not a good sign.

The D is more active in the O-zone while the Pens have possession, and aren’t taking as many unnecessary pinches at the blue line to try to regain possession. The forwards are circling back higher when the D activates so I think there’s been less odd-man rushes. At the beginning of the season the PK was way more aggressive, with the guy up top pressuring the puck handler and the bottom 3 PKers were clogging the high danger areas. That kind of went away the last few games, so hopefully they can correct that.

I’ve seen quotes on Muse wanted to move up the ice as a unit, it seems like he is going to mold his system to his players rather than force them to play his specific style. Yohe reported that people in the Pens org are impressed by his dedication at the rink.

Thanks jboyd. Whatever the expression is about peg in a hole. Diff players, diff styles, diff needs. Hopefully we start to trade/draft as a team to fill out those stylistic needs and start to gel. I don’t understand how gm’s can’t see that. This one Dman will fix our all offense/no defence style or vice versa. Silly geese!

LD is a disaster. Really concerning that Pickering didn’t make the team. I can’t believe Jones made the squad over Pickering. He blows.

Boyd described the changes better than I could. From my untrained eyes (in the first two games), they played a tighter checking game with a ton of puck support.

Then… The last couple of games, the muscle memory kicked in and they were back to trading chances with suspect goal tending. Almost night and day between the first two games and the last two. I don’t think this team has the legs (or will) to play how Muse wants them to play. The home opener against the Rags was comical.

Penguins really have something with Kindel and Brunicke.

2 goals out of the bottom 6 won’t get them far. (Kindel and Lizotte) a bigger surprise is both letang and ek have 0 points so far. I was concerned we would end up in no man’s land again at seasons end drafting 12-15th. Still early but looks like the real pens are showing up and maybe we will draft better than anticipated lol. Eventually brazaue will cool off too I imagine lol

Yeah good vibes after the first two games are pretty gone. Gonna be a rough season with some sporadic runs here and there. Hopefully we get to enjoy some moments from the stars and the young guys here and there.

Haha victoro! Well a bottom 6 goal and a few points for ek. Nice for a change. I’d like to get some youth learning from Sid. Hope dubas is working the phones and we have a good draft.

Man these late games are killer when you have a 2 year old who needs to be up at 7AM. I’m usually out by like 11:30. The whiskey didn’t help.

Isn’t that a normal 7:30PM start for you? Hahaha.

I’m the furthest east in North America, gents. I went to bed close to 3:00am after those weekend games.

What I love about being a pens fan from the west is the games usually start at 5:00 for me. I think the flames games are usually 7:30/8:00 or something like that at home but I usually only watch one a year when Pitt is in town.
