Woll And Kampf Updates; Leafs Vs. Bruins

The Toronto Maple Leafs play twice at home on Hockey Hall of Fame weekend, taking on the Boston Bruins at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night and Carolina on Sunday. The Leafs have won three straight in November and have played better after a sluggish opening month (5-5-1). The club’s goaltending situation is becoming less cloudy with Joseph Woll getting closer to returning after missing all of training camp, the preseason, and the first three weeks of the regular season on a personal leave of absence.

Woll spoke to reporters for the first time on Friday and chose not to enlighten the media on the reasons why he was away from the club.

“I’m very happy to be back. So I’d really like all the focus to be on my job to do here. I don’t want to create any distractions for myself or for the team. I think there’s enough here to focus on, and all I ask is that you guys respect that.” Woll said. “If, down the road, I am interested and think it’d be beneficial to talk about, I’ll initiate that.”

The Leafs goalie is still on LTIR, and is expected to play for the AHL Toronto Marlies as soon as Saturday in Lehigh Valley or Wednesday in Grand Rapids before being available to the big club. Proof that Woll is close were the roster moves that were made on Friday. Backup Cayden Primeau was placed on waivers, and if he clears, will join Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

Primeau was claimed off of waivers from the Hurricanes, and Carolina can re-claim him and place him directly with their AHL club if they choose. If Primeau is claimed, it is expected that Hildeby will start against the Canes on Sunday, if not claimed, Primeau likely makes the start and gets sent down once Woll is activated off of LTIR.

There are not expected to be any lineup changes from the group that played in the 5-2 victory over Utah, except for Simon Benoit returning from illness and replacing Dakota Mermis. Chris Tanev skated prior to the morning skate on Saturday, an encouraging sign for the veteran defenseman, who was taken off the ice on a stretcher last Saturday in Philadelphia.

The news regarding veteran center David Kampf is leaning towards a potential resolution in the very near future. Earlier this week, Puckpedia reported from league sources that Kampf had been suspended by the Leafs without pay for leaving their AHL club and, therefore, are not currently incurring the remaining $1.25 million cap hit for him while in the minors.

Frank Seravalli also reported that a resolution to the situation is expected soon. The contract termination would allow Kampf to find an NHL home (likely on a one-year prorated deal) or to go to Europe, while David Pagnotta reports that a trade is preferred, which would allow Kampf to stay on his current deal, but that would likely involve the Leafs taking a contract back. Pagnotta says this situation may be resolved as soon as the end of this weekend and that the two sides have been amicable.
