Red Wings: With Danielson in, who is out?

The Detroit Red Wings’ are on a three game slide. However, a bright spot has emerged.  Nate Danielson is a rookie, yet he provided an upgrade for the team. Danielson seems to be staying, consequently someone is likely out.

Michael Rasmussen was a scratch in the debut, thus he may be a trade candidate. Rasmussen’s defensive play is his calling card, however Danielson seems to provide that as well. Jonatan Berggren has also been scratched, yet Berggren seems to have more upside than Rasmussen offensively.

Both veterans watched the last game from the press box, accordingly both may be available. Berggren has just one year left on his deal, conversely Rasmussen is signed through next season. Neither player would likely make it through waivers, therefore Detroit is going to have to make a deal.

The final pieces of Ken Holland’s legacy

Berggren and Rasmussen hold an interesting position for Detroit, notwithstanding their limited roles.Ken Holland drafted both players, and along with Dylan Larkin. Larkin is the only player left from opening night in 2019 — Yzerman’s teardown is nearly complete.

The value of either player is unknown, however Berggren may be more attractive for NHL teams. Pittsburgh was rumored to have looked at Berggren, although a strong start may have cooled interest. Regardless of who Detroit moves, Yzerman has shaped this team completely.

Detroit’s youth movement continues as struggles mount

The Red Wings continue to get younger, so veterans are on high alert.. This season should be a continual battle for roster spots, moreover the core needs to be established. Detroit’s success lies firmly in organizational depth, hence the youth have an opportunity to break into the NHL.

Danielson’s arrival means that 12 players are homegrown, although that number is likely to change. One has to wonder if Yzerman can add, instead of just moving out excess players. Gaps at center and on defense are becoming more evident.

The question is, does this season warrant the move of a major asset? Apart from Alex DeBrincat, the Red Wings haven’t been able to land a major trade upgrade. A top defenseman could do a lot for this team, however that may not be an option. Yzerman has a big decision to make, but is an upgrade even available at this point?

Thanks for another enjoyable read Jeremey. I did not get to watch the last game because I live in western Canada and it was not televised here. I was curious to where McLellan played Danielson in the line up? I was hoping it would be with Kane and Debrincat, then move Kasper up to the wing with Larkin and Raymond, and Finney down to center the third line. He probably didn’t want to shake up the lines this much, but I was hoping he would. How did Danielson look in the game?

    Hi again,

one of the problems is Gibson or Talbot have to be very sharp when the team isn’t, and it didn’t happen enough on this losing streak.
And now, other teams know Kasper and the PP, so they are not surprised anymore. I cannot watch the full games but is the team already tired ? Is it just confidence for the goals ?
Detroit should be motivated facing one of the top teams, no question about that ! A lot of players are proud and want a “revenge”. A spark for the rest of the season ?
