The Detroit Red Wings won their third straight game, however it wasn’t easy. The Calgary Flames nearly closed the four goal gap in the third period. Still, the Red Wings were able to grab a much needed win and collect two points. The standings are still unbelievably tight, and the margin for error is slim.
Consequently, John Gibson has now won three straight games as goalie of record. Gibson was able to stop 34 of 37 shots, earning a .919 save percentage. This has been an important stretch for the veteran goalie who has struggled since arriving in Detroit.
The Red Wings now have points in six straight games, earning a 4-0-2 record in that time. The team is 3-0-1 on this six game road trip, a strong performance to be sure. During this win streak, there have also been some impressive individual performances.
Axel Sandin Pellikka and Alex Debrincat
Amongst the notable contributions is rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka. ASP now has 11 points in 31 games played, however five of those points have come in the last four. The rookie defenseman managed a goal and an assist in the win against Calgary.
Alex Debrincat also stood out for Detroit, gathering two goals and an assist in the win. Debrincat now has eight points (4 goals, 4 assists) in his past five games. This after a tough start to the season that saw a career high eight game goalless drought. Even So, Debrincat is now second on the team in goals (16) and leads in points (34).
Erik Gustafsson recalled, Edvinsson injured?
Unfortunately, the Red Wings are starting to see injuries picking up a bit. Defenseman Simon Edvinsson left the game, and Erik Gustafsson has been recalled from the AHL. Edvinsson has seen increased minutes this year, playing over 25 minutes some nights. Therefore, fans are hoping the injury isn’t serious and Edvinsson won’t miss any significant playing time.
Mason Appleton was placed on IR retroactive to November 29th to facilitate the call up. The condensed season is starting to wear on the players, with no significant break until around Christmas. Still, the Red Wings are seeing multiple players start to find their game. Veteran James Van Riemsdyk is coming off of a four game goal scoring streak, the longest of his career.
Detroit hopes to continue their current point streak with games against the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks. The Red Wings will need to be sharp in both games to try and maintain the current momentum. They will look for a strong finish on their longest road trip of the season.
