The Detroit Red Wings needed to bounce back after a tough loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Accordingly, the team dug deep to find an overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Red Wings have won their past three straight overtime games on home ice. Consequently, the Wings have managed to stay on top of the Atlantic Division.
The previous two overtime wins came courtesy of Moritz Seider and Dylan Larkin. This time, it was Simon Edvinsson who scored the game winning goal. Edvinsson’s presence loomed large in this contest, as he led the team in ice time. There was some concern earlier in the game as he was helped off the ice after blocking a shot. However, the 6’6” defenseman was able to return and play a huge role for Detroit in this win.
The Red Wings have had a very strong December, posting a 10-3-1 record. In that time, the team hasn’t experienced back to back losses. Overall, the team has posted a 23-14-3 record through 40 games this season. Consequently, the team is on pace for 98 points as they approach the halfway point of the season.
Simon Edvinsson and Moritz Seider
Besides a strong overall performance, Detroit has made progress in some important areas. In particular, Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson have started to shine this season. Both players were selected sixth overall, and their development is going to be key to this team’s success moving forward.
Moritz Seider has 30 points (7G, 23A) on the season, setting him on pace for a career high of 60. Seider has been a stalwart on Detroit’s blue line, and has yet to miss a game in his NHL career of 368 games. Additionally, Seider’s offensive contributions have started to generate conversations as a potential Norris Trophy candidate.
Simon Edvinsson’s path has been a bit longer, however he’s taken some big steps forward. Edvinsson sits second on the team for time on ice, averaging 22:06. Offensively, he’s been stronger recently with four points in his past five games. “Eddy” has done a lot to gain the trust of the coaching staff defensively. Consequently, Edvinsson and Seider seem locked in as the now and future top pairing for the Red Wings.
The Red Wings at the halfway point
Detroit will play their 41st game of the season to end the month of December. The team has had a strong showing in the compressed schedule. Accordingly, Detroit remains on pace in their hopes for a post season appearance. However, the second half will provide a daunting challenge.
The Red Wings will play 18 games between December 31st and February 4th. Additionally, they will have three sets of back to back contests during that stretch. The Atlantic Division remains incredibly tight, with little room for error. Detroit will have to continue to push hard to avoid a tenth straight year of missing the post season. However, the team’s strong first half has given them a strong foundation to try and achieve that goal.
