T WInhe Detroit Red Wings needed a big win to snap a two game losing streak. Accordingly, John Gibson stepped up and stopped 35 of 38 shots to help make that happen. Detroit was outshot in this game 38 to 20 by the Ottawa Senators. However, the Wings managed to score five goals, including a short handed tally by Michael Rasmussen.
Ottawa had all of the momentum early on, but an overturned goal in the first period gave Detroit some life. Afterward, the Red Wings scored three unanswered goals to end the first period 3-1. Andrew Copp opened the scoring with an unassisted steal and breakaway. Consequently, Copp now has 14 points since the beginning of December.
The line of Copp, Alex Debrincat and Patrick Kane has easily been Detroit’s most consistent over the past month. The trio has carried Detroit at even strength, and was the only line left in tact for this game. Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond were split up, and both ended up scoring in the win. Furthermore, Raymond scored his first even strength goal since the month of November.
James Van Riemsdyk continues to rise
Amongst the notable performances, James Van Riemsdyk added a goal and two assists for the Wings. JVR is another player who seems to have taken off since the beginning of December. In that time, Van Riemsdyk has scored 8 goals and 3 assists. Those totals have moved him into 4th for goal scoring, with 11 goals.
The Red Wings’ need for depth scoring is finally being addressed, with JVR leading the way. The 36 year old was acquired as a free agent, signed for just $1 million this past summer. In addition, he is just five goals shy of his total from last season, as he played for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Nate Danielson reassigned to Grand Rapids
John Leonard had been recalled from the AHL before the game against Ottawa. Consequently, Danielson had been made a healthy scratch. In 28 games, the rookie centerman has 2 goals and five assists. However, Danielson hasn’t registered a point in his past 11 contests.
The Grand Rapids Griffins are enjoying an historic season, with a 28-1-1-1 record through 31 games. Danielson will likely get top minutes in an incredibly positive environment that could quickly restore his confidence. However, it’s worth noting that Detroit didn’t need to make the move. The roster still had room, and so it remains to be seen if any other transactions will be made.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard was sent down to Grand Rapids after playing nine games. In that time has accumulated 21 points in 26 games. Therefore it would not be a surprise to see MBN get another look if an opportunity arises. The Red Wings will enjoy a rare two day break before returning to action against the Vancouver Canucks.
