Sherwood Dealt To San Jose For Draft Picks

The trade of Rasmus Andersson to Vegas on the weekend may have been the move that begins to unlock the NHL trade market, just over two weeks before the Olympic roster freeze. The Vancouver Canucks have been shopping forward Kiefer Sherwood since December, and reportedly were looking for a first-round pick in return.

On Monday, the Canucks dealt Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks for a pair of second-rounders and minor-league defenseman Cole Clayton. The Sharks sent their seconds in 2026 and 2027, and Clayton, 25, played four seasons in the Columbus organization with AHL Cleveland and signed a two-way deal with the Sharks over the summer.

Sherwood, 30, is a pending unrestricted free agent who has 17 goals in 44 games with Vancouver. The Sharks have several expiring contracts and boatloads of cap space, which would give them an excellent chance of getting the hard-hitting winger extended, but could also allow them to recoup their draft picks if they cannot before the NHL trade deadline on March 6.
