Lyon Ties Sabres Consecutive Wins Record

Goaltender Alex Lyon has tied the Buffalo Sabres franchise record for consecutive regular season victories by a netminder with nine. Lyon tied the team mark with a 5-0 road victory against the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon.  The nine-game record was first set by Gerry Desjardins in December of 1976.

While Lyon acknowledges the significance of reaching the record tying number, he knows ultimately it is about playing his best in each game.

“My process is feeling good right now”, said Lyon.  “I’m just trying to take it a day at a time cause you just have to keep hammering on the details and hope things work out and right now things are just working out.”

The win streak is all the more remarkable when you consider the challenges that Lyon has faced so far this season.

The 33-year-old netminder was slowed by a nine game injury absence in December and is one of a three goaltender group in Buffalo with Ukko-Pekka-Luukkonen and Colten Ellis.

Sabres still have crowded crease

The crowded goal crease has served the Sabres well over the last six weeks. Buffalo has turned its season around beginning with a ten win streak that began on December 9th and each goaltender has performed well during the run.

After spending much of the first ten weeks of the regular season at or near the bottom of the standings, the Sabres find themselves in a postseason position.

The task for each of the three netminders has been to be ready when called upon.

For Lyon the focus is on the team continuing to play well and gain points in the hotly contested Eastern Conference postseason race as the Olympic hiatus approaches.

It’s just a day at a time process,  explained Lyon.“ The second you get too far ahead of yourself it’s going to come back to bite you.”

“For me, what I’m always fearful of, I’m just thinking about how we’ve got five, six or seven games until break.  We can’t take our foot off the gas pedal, so we have to continue to compete and grind.”
