Sabres: Lyon Shatters Consecutive Wins Record

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon set the team record with his tenth consecutive victory in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night at Key Bank Center. The win continued Buffalo’s scorching run of success as the team collected a fifth straight win. Lyon downplayed his place in Sabres history as the team remained focused on the task ahead.

“It’s great”, said Lyon. “It’s awesome to be part of the history, but when you’re stacked up against guys like Ryan Miller and obviously (Dominik) Hasek, those are the guys that I idolized growing up. So, I’m not going to put myself anywhere near the conversation with those guys.”

Sabres make remarkable turnaround

Lyon’s focus is not on individual statistics, but on helping the Sabres continue an unprecedented run of wins. The Baudette, Minnesota native signed with the Sabres as a free agent with the Sabres last summer. While Lyon was originally cast in a backup role to number one netminder Ukko-Pekka-Luukkonen, injuries and opportunity in a three netminder environment have brought out the best in Lyon.

His excellent play has pushed him to a more prominent spot in the Buffalo crease.

“I’ve tried to carve out just being a valuable and useful asset,” said Lyon. “That’s the way I think about my career, obviously had to embrace the competition from the start. That’s kind of been my ability to stay in the league is embracing those situations.“

As the Sabres move toward the Olympic break, the goal remains to move up the standings and the team winning remains priority one.“

For me, I’m happy for the team,” Lyon said. “My goal coming into the season was to help win games and try to fight for that ultimate goal and that’s what’s most important to me, so the process, we’re just in the middle of it.

“It’s been a really fun group for me to be a part of. I just feel really appreciative to be able to be around these guys.
