ParticipantSo Steve Peters went, former Coyotes video coach, on a podcast after his video breakdown of Michkov’s game
His segment starts 12:11 after the 1st breakHe admits that he didn’t take into account Michkov switching wings in his original review.
At 18:00 they start talking about Michkov’s east-west game and how you DON’T want to coach that out of him but Peters also talks about(around 20 min) how slowing the game down in the defensive zone causes Michkov turnovers. Michkov has 14 Defensive zone Turn overs on the year, less than half of Konecny (30) or Cates (28). Hathaway with 23.
Says TOI issue overblown and that his critique is 80% everyone sees these issues the same way but 20% was Tocchet’s views.
24:15. They start talking about about Michkov’s overthinking and makes several statements
1. Many star offensive players are horrible at defense and nobody cares. If Michkov was scoring 30 goals nobody would care about his defense.
2. Players play better with positive reinforcement but Tocchet is never going to be that guy and is rigid in how he wants players to play.
3. Michkov is afraid to make mistakes.
4. He thinks it’s crazy that we are still talking about physical fitness in February. Players can play themselves into shape in 3 to 4 weeks. If the player is still out of shape it is a coaching strength/conditioning staff issue.
5. Michkov issues are most likely over thinking because of coaching rather than conditioning.
6. Tocchet does not trust him.
7. With a better player leadership group Michkov would be having a different year. (ie. having a Sidney Crosby in his ear vs a Konecny).Pretty much most of his points point to Tocchet being the wrong coach for this team as Tocchet wants to win now and has a rigid, nonnegotiable way he wants to do it.
