Olympics Latvia

Forty six years to the day of the Americans’ win over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid at the 1980 Olympics, the Team USA  delivered an unlikely result against today’s best hockey team in the world.

While the U.S. isn’t lagging far behind the Canadians in talent, as it did the Soviet Union back then, the gold-medal game seemed to be going all  Team Canada‘s way in the final two periods, with chance after golden chance for the red-clad Canadians.
Goaltender Connor Hellebucyk held strong and allowed just one goal, and was the reason the Americans are flying home with the gold medal, making several spectacular saves to keep a potent Canadian attack from snatching the lead as the game progressed, and allowing the game to get to overtime.
Hellybucyk also probably made the most iconic save on Devon Toews in the third since Braden Holtby made a stick save on Alex Tuch in Game 2 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final, stopping a wide-open chance with the paddle of his stick and deflecting the puck just wide. After hanging on in the third, converting to a 3-on-3 may have aided the American cause, forcing the U.S. to open up their game with the extra ice, not allowing teams to just defend against the attack.
And in the extra session, the Americans successfully scored on a counter in overtime, catching the Canadians up ice after a possession and allowing a 3-on-1 that Jack Hughes converted into the golden goal.

Great Moments Few And Far Between

Since 1980, there have been some terrific moments for USA Hockey, including a three-game win in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, a pair of silver medals on North American ice in 2002 and 2010, several World Junior Championship titles, and, most recently, a World Championship title – the latter of which earned the U.S. an advantageous schedule at this tournament.
But really, talent-wise, the fact that the United States comes home from Italy with a gold medal is the crowning of a decades-long process started decades ago when the National Team Development Program began to build a roster that was capable of competing at this stage. While somewhat controversial at the time for putting lots of resources into a limited group of players, it has produced a lot of hardware for the United States since.

Where Does This Rank In US Hockey History?

In 1980, the United States fielded a well-conditioned team that used a long pre-Olympic tour and played a system designed to frustrate the Soviet Union for 60 minutes. But 2026 was the result of the U.S. talent level reaching the world’s top level, and one year after losing in overtime in the 4 Nations Face-Off final to Canada, the Americans turned the tables on a bigger stage.
This result is bigger than the first gold medal in 1960 in California, where the Soviets were just ready to take over the reign of Olympic dominance and the World Cup in 1996, as well as the World Juniors wins, which also have some memorable overtime moments against Canada, but hockey-wise, it certainly has a different meaning than 1980.
1980 had some serious geopolitical tones, as the Soviet Union dominated the Olympic level even more than the Canadians had dominated recent Olympics with NHL talent. It was nearly as significant as it was for the psyche of a nation that was struggling with inflation, unemployment, and hostages in Iran, and winning a very unexpected gold medal on home soil against their international foe was a bit of a salve for the nation as a whole, looking for something to cheer about.
That team was made up of college players doing the tournament before turning pro, and while the Soviets were technically amateurs in the eyes of the IOC, they were essentially paid professionals as soldiers in the Red Army who spent 11 months out of the year preparing for tournaments.
This time around, this gold is the product of an improvement in American hockey to have NHL players able to compete with the top talent of the world’s best hockey-playing nation.

US Trailed Only Once In Milano

The Americans only trailed once in the entire tournament, down 2-1 to Denmark in the preliminary round, and never trailed at all in the three-game elimination round. They also ended up finishing 6-0, outscoring opponents 26-9, and certainly looked more impressive down the stretch of the tournament heading into the gold-medal game.
Canada and the United States were the clear cream of the crop in Milan, and of the two, the U.S. probably was more impressive heading into the gold-medal game.
Hockey-wise, 2026 is more significant for the United States because is the culmination of the development of the national program, and in the two NHL tournaments held since the last Olympics in 2014 with NHL players, the United States has gone to overtime both times against Canada, and split the results.
For the first time since the NHLers were sent to the Olympics in 1998, the NHL gets its biggest prize of seeing the United States win gold, which certainly will produce record ratings in the United States, particularly with the overtime result. One of the main reasons for sending players to the Olympics was to help grow the game, and certainly, hockey will be one of the most memorable moments of these games in the U.S., along with the women’s hockey team earning a golden sweep for USA Hockey.
While Canada had proven its dominance at this level in 2002, 2010, and 2014, the U.S. announced its arrival in 2026 on top of the world stage and came back to the U.S. with a medal that had been in the works for decades.
