Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin is the club’s nominee for the 2026 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The Masterton is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship nd dedication to the game.
The 25 year old native of Linkoping, Sweden was selected first overall by the Sabres in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In addition to being the top defenseman in Buffalo’s lineup, Dahlin has represented the Sabres in the past three NHL All Star games in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
In the summer of 2025, Dahlin’s fiance Carolina needed a life saving heart transplant in France after suffering heart failure while on vacation. He had to balance the family trauma with professional obligations. Dahlin took a brief leave of absence before return to the team.
Dahlin brings excellence to Sabres blueline
His play has outstanding been this season. He recorded the one-hundredth goal of his NHL career and has been a crucial component of the Sabres return to the postseason after a fifteen year absence.
The talented blueliner was also a standout performer for team Sweden at February’s winter Olympic hockey tournament in Milano-Cortina.
For all his accomplishments in the game of hockey, his greatest challenge and victory occurred off the ice. The couple also experienced the loss of an unborn child during Carolina’s recovery.
The trophy is named after Bill Masterton, the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game. The winner is selected by a poll of members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association after one player is nominated from each NHL team.
