Are The Leafs Closing In On A GM Hire?

The daily main story on Hockey Hot Stove is presented by Benevolent Bakery and by SoShel. Today: Are the Toronto Maple Leafs closing in on hiring their next General Manager?

There appears to be some conflicting information regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs’ hunt for a new hockey boss, with some insiders indicating that a decision may occur as soon as this week, while others say it may take a little more time. The main concern of the club’s followers is not to get it done quickly, but to get it right and to get the most capable person or team to right the ship.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on Wednesday’s 32 Thought podcast clarified the situation a bit, saying that he mentioned that the club might a decision before the end of the week, but then was contradicted by another source, saying that the club was “probably not” going to make an announcement this week.

The Leafs held in-person interviews on Tuesday with Dallas Stars assistant GM Scott White and NY Rangers assistant GM Ryan Martin, but Friedman was not as definitive on whether former Arizona Coyotes GM John Chayka or Boston Bruins assistant GM Evan Gold were in Toronto this week. Gold was in Buffalo with the Bruins for Game 2 of the Buffalo – Boston series, so it is possible that he made the 90-minute drive up the QEW.

Friedman indicated that this group represents the finalists for the job, but that surprisingly did not include former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis. As recently as last week, Gillis seemed to be the favorite. Toronto apparently spoke to Gillis months ago and was interviewed last week by Zoom, but the focus on him could be more misdirection, as the Leafs are trying to control the situation and the process. He furthered that the plan may be to bring Gillis in for another interview.
