It appears that Leafs are waiting for Cassidy to become available. He would be a good choice IMO. Any coach that doesn’t have Matthews slotted as a defensive specialist taking every defensive zone faceoff would be a significant improvement.
It’s difficult for the Leafs to move forward right now. They still have the Marlies playing for the Calder Cup and need to evaluate the players still playing. Right now, they’re showcasing players that could be in the mix for a position with the Leafs, or possibly trade chips. With the draft and free agency coming quickly, they need to find their coach, but with Gruden doing a great job on the farm, you have to see what he’s doing right and decide if there’s a spot for him with the big club next season.
Also, someone like Ben Danford may show that he’s ready for next season, with his play, since joining the Marlies. That might hasten the move to trade a Brandon Carlo for picks or defensive help for a puck moving defenseman. It’s great that the Marlies are on this run, but it’s making it a tight fit for the next coaching staff to be seated at the draft table.
