Sabres Roster Will Have Holes To Fill

The Buffalo Sabres were the surprise feel good story of the 2025-26 National Hockey League season. The club surprised everyone by rescuing their season with a climb from the basement of the Eastern Conference standings all the way to capturing the top spot in the hotly contested Atlantic division.

The recently completed campaign saw the Sabres put an end to a league record fourteen year playoff absence and come within one goal of reaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs Final Four.

The future looks very bright for Buffalo as a new season is on the horizon.  However, in order to improve on last season’s finish ,the organization will have to navigate some big challenges. Namely, there will be a higher level of expectation coupled with inevitable roster change that is simply a product of doing business in today’s NHL.

Sabres won’t sneak up on opponents again

The Sabres will not catch anyone off guard this fall. Buffalo will face opponents that will be mindful of what the club accomplished last season and the Atlantic division field will once again boast a strong level of competition. Every regular season point available will be vitally important.

Giving the same group of players an opportunity to build on last season’s success won’t be an option as the upcoming 26-27 season quickly approaches.

Departures from the roster are inevitable.

Defenseman Michael Kesselring has already exited following a swap just last week with the San Jose Sharks.

The Sabres and pending unrestricted free agent winger Alex Tuch remains far apart in negotiations to keep the Syracuse New York native in Buffalo for next season and beyond.

Bowen Byram, one of the critical linchpins  of the Sabres blueline will likely be on the move as well. The twenty-five year old rear guard’s path to a number one defenseman slot is blocked by Buffalo’s, 2018 first overall draft selection Rasmus Dahlin.

The roster holes left by the likely losses  of top performers Tuch and Byram will make this summer a challenging time for general manager Jarmo Kekalainen.

The Sabres will need to explore all options as the draft and free agency begin.

Moving established players to rework the lineup will be explored.

In addition, the club’s first round draft pick could be in play as well as Buffalo’s stable of talented young prospects.

The fear of the disruption of team chemistry is real as the current group grew together significantly as last season progressed.

The task ahead for Kekalainen and the Sabres will be to rework key roster spots on the fly as  departures come to fruition.

The goal will be to avoid a fall back in the standings and keep the club in the league’s upper eschalon.
