The Philadelphia Flyers go directly from the 2026 NHL Draft into Development Camp this week. On the Monday with Meltzer edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I reviewed the Flyers’ picks, selection by selection. We also discussed the Zach Werenski rumors, Darnell Nurse, Rasmus Ristolainen, and much more.
The Flyers only drafted one forward this year — KJ Sauer — to go along with towering shutdown defenseman Maksim Sokolovskii, two-way defenseman Brek Liske, offensive-minded defenseman Max Laatikainen, and Czech goaltenders Martin Psohlavec and Marek Sklenicka.
Sokolovskii, drafted 27th overall after the Flyers traded down from 21st to obtain two additional picks — is a project. However, he’s an intriguing prospect. He’ll need a lot of patience and developmental guidance. I wrote about him in one of the pre-Draft profile series articles.

Meanwhile, on the most recent edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus had an in-depth discussion with In Goal magazine’s Kevin Woodley. They spoke about both Joseph Woll and Samuel Ersson (now with the Ottawa Senators). Kevin gave a detailed scouting report assessing Woll’s strengths and weaknesses as an NHL goaltender. Overall, the goalie analyst remains very high on Woll as long as the player stays healthy.
Woodley believes that Woll is particularly well suited to the Flyers’ systems. Rick Tocchet strongly emphasizes the need to allow his goalies to play half the net as much as possible, maximizing predictability of where shots originate.
Team Toyota Spotlight: Brek Liske
Prior to the 2026 Draft, I’d never personally known the family of a projected high-round Draft pick. I’ve known Manitoba native Lonnie Liske for years. He’s a diehard Flyers fan, and he passed that along to his son, Brek. Eleven years ago, I met up with Lonnie and Brek before a Flyers game in Philly. They also took in a Flyers practice. Brek obtained autographs and also met head coach Dave Hakstol.
During the pandemic, Lonnie asked me to do a Zoom session with Brek and some of his teammates. The main focus was on why hockey coaches focus so much on small details and how paying attention to those details is the key to getting lots of ice time. I don’t know if it resonated with kids that age but I enjoyed it. The kids were mostly interested in what it’s like to work around an NHL team. The rest was probably boring.
Fast forward to 2025-26. Brek played an important role in the Everett Silvertips winning the Western Hockey League championship. They reached the Memorial Cup final.
Liske is a two-way defenseman — not exceptional in any area (except poise under pressure) but above-average in most. He has some room to fill out and add some more quickness. He projects as a “steady Eddie” type of blueliner. Ultimately, I think he could make for a reliable No. 5 defenseman as a pro.

He really took a step in the second half of the season when they had an injury to a defenseman. That opened some more opportunity for him. He flourished right through to the Memorial Cup.
