Sabres Kids Need To Be Alright 

Expectations will be high for the Buffalo Sabres heading into the upcoming 2026-27 National Hockey League season. 

How things have changed for the Sabres and their fans. The club was the surprise of the 2025-26 campaign. The team overcame a disastrous first half of the season, which saw them buried at the bottom of the standings. The fortunes of the team experienced a dramatic reversal in early December, and the victories just kept coming for a group that had been written off as a failure and destined to miss the postseason for a fifteenth straight year. 

Significant winning streaks followed, and Buffalo captured the Atlantic Division title and came within one goal of a berth in the Eastern Conference Finals. 

The offseason has seen significant departures from the lineup that ended a record-setting playoff drought. Top winger Alex Tuch is now with the Capitals, and offensive defenseman Bowen Byram was dealt to Chicago along with penalty-killing forward Jordan Greenway. 

Nearing the end of July, the Sabres have yet to add offensive reinforcements to make up for the points lost with the departures of Tuch and Byram. 

Barring a late summer roster addition, Buffalo will be looking to the organizational youth movement to hit the back of the net. 

The Kids Are Being Relied On

Talented center Jiri Kulich is set to return to the fold after missing all but 12 games last season with a blood clot. 

22-year old Noah Ostlund has shown promise and is coming off an 11-goal regular season total in sixty games played and one playoff goal in three postseason appearances last season.  

The club will also be looking to Konsta Helenius to build on his impressive NHL debut. The 20-year-old Finland native tallied four points in nine 25-26 regular season games and two goals in only four playoff contests played last spring. 

With a healthy Florida Panthers squad back in the mix in the Atlantic and a much-improved Washington Capitals team bolstering the Metropolitan, the battle for points in the Eastern Conference will be intense. 

Buffalo needs to build on a memorable 25-26 season and the renewed excitement of a passionate fan base that came with it. 

This is not the time for a step back. 

If the current roster remains unchanged, the Sabres will need significant contributions from multiple top prospects to secure a postseason return.
