The Buffalo Sabres are coming off a season which turned the fortunes of the franchise in the right direction.

A dramatic shift which began in the month of December resulted in an Atlantic Division title and the team’s first postseason berth in fourteen years. One of the most memorable runs in club history ended with the Sabres just one goal short of a trip to the Eastern Conference Final.

The 2026-2027 Sabres will have to prove that last season’s heroics were not simply an aberration. With the loss of top winger Alex Tuch and top four defenseman Bowen Byram the group will need to be strong out of the gate this fall to avoid a significant regression. Fan engagement is once again at a high level after many years of disappointment and apathy.

A strong start will be critical as a new campaign begins. Although Buffalo opens the 2026-27 schedule with a road contest at Columbus, the Sabres have four home matchups in the first ten days of the season.

When the calendar moves to month two in November, the slate begins with a four game home stand. Ticket sales are up significantly from a year ago, with season tickets already sold out and spirits are high for a fan base seeking back to back postseason berths.

A repeat of an Atlantic Division Championship seems a lofty goal given what will be a hotly contested race. With the anticipation of the two time Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers returning to form and a stronger Toronto Maple Leafs lineup in the mix it will once again be tough sledding in the Atlantic.

Given the significant roster subtractions and the absence of proven additions, a great weight will be placed on the shoulders of the Sabres young prospects. Forwards Noah Ostlund and Konsta Helenius will garner much attention as the team looks to pick up where last spring ended.

With Western New York also focused on another Buffalo Bills season and the opening of a new stadium in Orchard Park, the Sabres need to be prepared to hit the ground running in October.

Staying relevant as a new season moves on will be a must for a Sabres team looking to live up to a much higher level of expectation.
