Leafs Top 50 Prospects – Tyler Hopkins

The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has drafted and developed a number of youngsters currently playing in the NHL (Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Matthew Knies), but the club under former GM’s Kyle Dubas and Brad Treliving, and new GM John Chayka, have had different ideas of what kind of prospects they wanted to populate the organization with.

The Leafs will have to get used to not having their own first-round picks for the next two years, and that will make it more imperative for them to hit on picks in the later rounds. In the 2025 NHL Draft, with a pick acquired from San Jose in the deal for defenseman Timothy Liljegren, Toronto selected center Tyler Hopkins.

The Campbellville, ON native played two-and-a-half seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs and, in his draft year, had 51 points (20 goals, 31 assists) in 67 games. In his third OHL season, the 6’1”, 181 lb. center averaged nearly a point-per-game in Kingston before he was dealt to Guelph in late December. For the Storm, he continued a similar pace and ended the season with 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) in 56 games.

The 19-year-old was one of 31 players invited by Team Canada to the World Junior Summer Showcase in July and August, putting him on the radar for the upcoming World Junior Championships in Alberta this December. With his solid two-way ability, it is possible that Hopkins makes the club as a center lower in the lineup.
