Rick Tocchet’s Philadelphia Flyers return to preseason action on Tuesday. They visit Marco Sturm’s Boston Bruins at TD Garden in Boston.
Game time is 7:00 p.m. EDT. The broadcast is on NBCSP in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Flyers sustained a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals at the Giant Center in Hershey on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Flyers’ game day roster will hold a 9:30 a.m. EDT morning skate at the FTC in Voorhees before they depart for Boston. Subsequently, the non-game group has a dual session (11:30 a.m. EDT on the Flyers rink, 12:05 p.m. EDT on the Phantoms rink). I will post the game day roster when it’s available.
Recap: Capitals 5 – Flyers 2
The Flyers played a solid first period but their game deteriorated over the final 40 minutes. They mustered just two shots in the final stanza. Additionally, they had coverage issues through the middle of the ice and weak side of the defensive zone. Moreover, Philly had a failed five-minute power play and coughed up a third period shorthanded goal.
Most notably, Philly lost second-year forward Denver Barkey. The youngster, who lined up at center for this game, sustained a first period hit from Martin Fehervary. Subsequently, Barkey skated the first shift of the middle period. He departed thereafter, and did not return. The official word is that he sustained a lower-body injury. No further information was available.
Rookie hopeful Cole Knuble led the Flyers with one goal and one assist on Monday. Meanwhile, veteran role player Jack Studicka opened the scoring with a first period power play goal. Joseph Woll played the first two periods in net, stopping 16 of 19 shots. Carson Bjarnason played the final 20 minutes.
Monday’s Lineup
On Monday in Hershey, few NHL regulars dressed for the Flyers. For example, none among Travis Sanheim, Rasmus Ristolainen, Cam York, Jamie Drysdale, Nick Seeler, Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov, Trevor Zegras, Noah Cates, Sean Couturier, Tyson Foerster, Owen Tippett or newcomer Noel Acciari were in the lineup.
Do not look yet for a full complement of NHL regulars until the latter half of the preseason, when the Flyers return to Philadelphia to rematch with Washington and Boston. However, there will be a smattering of familiar games in the second preseason tilt. On Monday, this is how the Flyers arranged their starting lineup:

Kevin Hayes retires
Former Flyers center Kevin Hayes announced his retirement as an active player on Monday. He spent five games in the KHL with the Tatarstan-based Ak Bars Kazan before he decided to end his playing career at age 34. Hayes spent four seasons with the Flyers (2019-20 to 2022-23). His most productive Philadelphia season was his first year (23 goals, 41 points plus 13 playoff points in 16 playoff games).
Hayes was a finalist for the Masterton Trophy in 2021-22. He showing incredible perseverance through immense personal tragedy and physical hardship that limited him to 48 games played. Hayes worked well under Alain Vigneault and Mike Yeo. Later in his tenure, he clashed with John Tortorella over his declining usage.
On June 27, 2023, the Flyers traded Hayes to the St. Louis Blues for a 2024 sixth-round pick. Hayes finished his NHL career with the Blues (one season) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (two seasons). He appeared in only 28 games for the Penguins in 2025-26.
