Blackhawks Weekly Recap: NHL Week 4

Every Monday, we bring you the Blackhawks Weekly Recap, covering everything from the NHL roster to the AHL Rockford IceHogs and top prospects in the system.

We’ll review the week’s results, highlight standout performances, and close out with our Three Stars of the Week across all levels.

This recap covers games from Monday to Sunday (Week 4).

NHL: Blackhawks Split the Week (1-1-1)

Game 1: Blackhawks 7 – Senators 3

Chicago kicked off the week with a statement win at home, lighting up the Ottawa Senators for seven goals in front of an electric United Center crowd.

Connor Bedard stole the show with his first career hat trick, scoring twice in the opening frame and sealing the night in the third period.

Louis Crevier, Colton Dach, and Frank Nazar also found the scoresheet, while Spencer Knight stopped 21 of 24 shots for the victory.

Ottawa managed to close the gap briefly in the second period, but Chicago’s young core answered with authority. The Blackhawks were quick in transition, dominated puck possession, and capitalized on nearly every chance.

Coach’s Take: Bedard’s confidence is growing game by game. When he’s driving the offense, this team can hang with anyone.

Game 2: Jets 6 – Blackhawks 3

The road trip started on a sour note in Winnipeg. The Jets’ veteran first line of Connor, Scheifele, and Vilardi combined for nine points and exploited Chicago’s defensive coverage all night long.

Despite the lopsided score, there were some positives. Andre Burakovsky scored again, Teuvo Teravainen added one on the power play, and Alex Vlasic continued to show poise with his first of the season.

However, turnovers and failed clears in the defensive zone proved costly. Winnipeg’s puck movement was simply too much to handle, and Spencer Knight didn’t get much help in front of him.

Coach’s Take: This was the kind of loss that teaches lessons. Chicago’s defensive structure broke down too often, and against a team like Winnipeg, those mistakes end up in the back of the net.

Game 3: Oilers 3 – Blackhawks 2 (OT)

The Blackhawks closed the week with a gritty performance in Edmonton, pushing Connor McDavid and company to overtime before falling 3-2.

Edmonton opened the scoring in the second period on a goal by Leon Draisaitl, but Tyler Bertuzzi answered back for Chicago off a slick setup from Bedard. After another Oilers tally, Andre Burakovsky tied it early in the third to force overtime.

Goaltender Spencer Knight was sharp, stopping 27 shots, while Chicago’s effort level was night and day compared to Winnipeg. The Oilers finally ended it on a point blast by Evan Bouchard at 2:43 of OT.

Coach’s Take: That’s the kind of road game you can build on — smart, disciplined, and competitive against a powerhouse. You’ll take that point every time.

AHL: Tough Week for the Rockford IceHogs (1-2-0)

The Rockford IceHogs opened the week in spectacular fashion but couldn’t carry that momentum through the weekend. A pair of losses to the Grand Rapids Griffins exposed inconsistency that will need quick correction.

Game 1 – Oct 28 @ Chicago Wolves | Win 6-1

Rockford came flying out of the gate in Rosemont and never looked back. Nick Lardis opened the scoring just 54 seconds in, followed seconds later by Jackson Cates to stun the Wolves crowd.

The IceHogs poured in four first-period goals before Joey Anderson and Samuel Savoie added insurance in the second.

Goaltender Drew Commesso was sharp when called upon, stopping 20 of 21 shots.

Rockford’s speed and puck pressure overwhelmed Chicago from start to finish, with a relentless forecheck and quick puck movement through the neutral zone.

Game 2 – Nov 1 vs Grand Rapids Griffins | Loss 4-2

Back home at the BMO Center, the IceHogs couldn’t replicate their Tuesday energy. Grand Rapids took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame on a John Leonard power-play goal and a short-handed strike from Dominik Shine.

Rockford pushed back late — Jackson Cates buried one in the second and Nick Lardis ripped a power-play one-timer in the third — but the Griffins’ special teams proved decisive. Shine iced it with an empty-net goal to secure the win.

Game 3 – Nov 2 @ Grand Rapids Griffins | Loss 6-2

Less than 24 hours later, the IceHogs were right back on the ice for the rematch — and fatigue showed.

Aidan Thompson opened the scoring early on a wrap-around, assisted by Kevin Korchinski, but the Griffins quickly responded. Samuel Savoie added another to keep things close at 3-2 midway through the second, yet Grand Rapids dominated the final period, scoring three unanswered to run away with a 6-2 win.

Rockford was out-shot 34-31 and lost the special-teams battle. Mitchell Weeks made 28 saves in a tough outing, while Michal Postava turned aside 29 for the Griffins.

Final Thought

You can still consider it a good week for the Chicago Blackhawks. Other than the loss to Winnipeg, the team played solid hockey overall.

This is a rebuilding group showing more effort, learning their system in the trenches, and focusing on developing their young core.

The absence of Ilya Mikheyev in recent games has been noticeable, while Jason Dickinson remains day-to-day. Even with those setbacks, the compete level and structure under pressure continue to improve.

For the Rockford IceHogs, it was a rough stretch, but those kinds of weeks happen during a long season.

The group needs to tighten defensively and find more consistency. Goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy is listed week-to-week, and Paul Ludwinski is unfortunately out for the season.

Thanks Coach. Good effort against Edmonton. Another moral victory I guess. Hawks have had a lot of those this season. Seven losses this season as of now. Five by one goal. Two in OT, one in a shootout. One game a 2 goal loss with a late empty netter accounting for that difference. Only one blowout loss, the recent game against Winnipeg. Once these guys begin to learn how to win the close games they’ll start accumulating more points. Goes to show you how one or two misplays in a game can make a difference in the outcome.

    Thanks Frenchy good stuff.

I think Griffins are a good test for the kiddies. Yzerman has been building the club up now for 6 years i believe.

Per our discussion yesterday maybe it’s the wrong way to express it, i don’t take issue with the Blackhawks D pinching in the offensive zone, what’s been burning us is the defenseman after a decent offensive keep will pinch in the neutral zone, and this is bad because the forwards can fly out of the D Zone since even if we win the pinch we have to wait for everyone to get on sides again. I didn’t see that vs the Oilers and hope it continues that way for at least the road trip.

    per Scott Powers:
Oliver Moore was recalled, in Seattle for the morning skate, and expected to play tonight.
Dickinson is now week to week.
