Day 2 of the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase was a tough one for the split-squad American squads. USA Blue (0-2-0) lost 3-2 to Finland (1-1-0). Aatos Koivu scored twice for the Finals. Linesmates Roope Vesterinen (goal) and Heikki Ruohonen (one assist) also got on the scoresheet as their line accounted for all of the Finnish offense. Flyers center prospect Ruohonen has two assists in two games to date.
Team Finland goaltender Patrik Kerkola stepped up big in the second period, stopping 13 of 14 shots. Otherwise, the Lions held USA Blue to a combined seven shots on goal between the first (two) and third (five) periods.
The USA Blue goals were scored by Cole McKinney in the second period and Kamil Bednarik. Neither Jack Murtagh nor Shane Vansaghi got on the scoresheet in relatively limited ice time on Monday. Murtagh was whistled off on a second period elbowing minor. Max Westergard once again skated left wing on Finland’s third line.
In Monday’s second game, Team Sweden (2-0-0) defeated USA White (1-1-0) by a 4-3 count. In a very evenly played game, shots on goal were 33-33 and game seesawed through the first (1-1) and second (2-2) periods. The Americans took a 3-2 edge in the third period on a Brodie Ziemer goal. Liam Danielsson knotted the score at the 15:11 mark. Finally, with nine ticks remaining on the third period clock, Felix Ohrqvist netted the game-winning goal for the Junior Crowns.
The Swedes gave Flyers prospect Jack Berglund extensive ice time on Sunday, centering the top line. On Monday, the coaches looked at other players
Flyers Canadian prospects in action on Tuesday
Team Canada will play a Canada Red vs. Canada White scrimmage on Tuesday. The two participating Flyers prospects are on opposite sides. 2025 first-round pick Porter Martone is on Canada Red’s first line right wing with linemates Gavin McKenna and Berkly Catton.
Meanwhile, Flyers 2024 second-round pick Spencer Gill is on Canada White’s third pairing. He’s partnered with Montreal Canadiens prospect Owen Protz.
Flyers announce Rookie Series
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today the dates for their 2025 Rookie Series, which will feature a pair of games against the New York Rangers’ prospects.
The games will take place Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 13 at 5:05 p.m. at the PPL Center in Allentown.
