Most of us were not surprised Marner was a no-show, this is who he is more often than not when the pressure gets heavy and the game does too.
The game was fast and physical & he became the wallflower that he is when the game gets that way.

Nobody has shit the bed like Marner when it’s games 5,6 or 7 in a playoff series for nearly a decade when you factor in what he was paid to do by the Leafs vs what he did (or didn’t) do. Now we can add in Gold Medal game – great.
Others have failed miserably from the Leafs core (and from Team Canada) it’s factual and 99% of the Leaf fanbase knows it but nobody to the degree that greedy Mitch did over and over and over again.
Maybe that will change in Vegas, maybe not but let’s also not forget Marner was offered a contract to stay in Toronto and left on his own.

I’d rather the Leafs miss the playoffs this year and do a re-jig for next year vs have made the playoffs and then got bounced in the 1st round again due to the same soft core led by a few including Marner. Someone had to go – Marner decided on his own it would be him after he veto’d the trade to the Canes it is what it is.
Most sane people knew this year would be a step back for the Leafs, it’s been worse than most predicted as have the Leafs injuries including losing huge chunks of their D core for long periods of time as well as one of their top 2 goalies for long chunks of time.

In 5v5 OT vs the USA at the Four Nations, who was feeding McDavid the puck to win the game? Marner. In do or die vs. Finland, who won the game in TO. Marner.
Canada lost the Gold Medal game because MacKinnon can’t hit an open net. Makar also underperformed and threw the game away in OT with an idiotic pinch and lazy back check. Celebrini, as good as he was early in the tournament, misfired in the end. Cooper refused to create a different enough combination of players when things were clearly not working as planned.
If Marner had played more regular shifts with McDavid, especially on the 5v3 PP or in OT, Canada wins that game because Marner would draw the defense and let McDavid shoot, which is what won them the 4-Nations. Instead, McDavid kept drawing the defense and created chances for MacKinnon who couldn’t score on open nets. Instead, Cooper kept going back to MacKinnon and Celebrini despite them obviously having a bad game.
What did Matthews do to win the Gold? Barely anything. Yet you’ll pretend he carried Team USA to gold while sit there and cry about Marner meanwhile the majority of the team, including MacKinnon, Celebrini, McDavid etc. had 0 goals and 0 points.
