    September 30, 2026: MANITOBA’S ROSTER

I previously pointed out that there were three departures and one addition after recruiting looked over. I thought that more names might have been added, but the roster looks like it is stuck at 24, for now at least. Since the post From July 14th is getting old, I will repeat the career totals for recruits in this post.

    Goaltenders:

    Returning:
    30 Matthew Kieper G (3-3-1, 3.72 GAA, .882 S%)
    31 Braden Holt G (8-9-2, 3.57 GAA, .897 S%)

    Arrivals:
34 Justin Perreault G – Spokane Chiefs (WHL), Winnipeg Blues & Dauphin Kings (MJHL)

    ➤ WHL: 0-0-0, 0.00 GAA, 1.000 S%
    ➤ MJHL: 9-10-0, 3.67 GAA, .893 S%

    Departures:
    34 Cole Plowman G (1-1-0, 2.99 GAA, .864 S%)

The Bisons lost Plowman, their #3 goaltender. His stats were comparable to those of Holt and Kieper. He had just two starts. His replacement was supposed to be Austin Dubinsky. However, after the home exhibition games against Regina, Perreault’s name surfaced and Dubinsky’s name vanished. The goaltending last year was roughly league-average, and should be about the same this year. Kieper and Holt each went the distance in the home exhibition games, and Perreault did likewise in the Friday away game. There were no stats available for last Saturday’s 9-8 win, but my guess is that they would not be flattering.

    Defencemen:

    Returning:
    6 Kaycee Coyle D (22-4-6-10)
    4 Ben Bonni D (27-1-9-10)
    22 Tanner Willick D (26-1-4-5)
    3 Sam Borschowa D (27-1-4-5)
    8 Evan Toth D (24-0-4-4)
    27 Zach Turner D (13-1-1-2)

    Arrivals:
    28 Liam Longo – D – Toronto Patriots (OJHL)

    ➤ OJHL: 150 GP, 8 G, 48 A, 56 Pts

    Departures:
    13 Luke Brenton D (28-3-15-18)
    5 David Bielik D (1-0-0-0)

The loss of Brenton will be felt. He was the team’s best defenceman last year. He has now gone from the ECHL to the CW to the NCAA in consecutive seasons. The Herd has just seven blueliners, below the eight or nine they usually have. That said, their 8th defenceman from a year ago (Bielik) only dressed for the one game. Forward Nolan Chastko moved from forward to defence for an extended stint in the WHL, so perhaps he figures in to the depth chart. I wouldn’t mind seeing a big ol’ Manitoba farm boy arrive in camp.

    Forwards:

    Returning:
    21 Dawson Pasternak F (27-6-19-25)
    17 Skylar Bruce F (27-10-14-24)
    24 Lucas Brennan (27-10-9-19)
    9 Eric Alarie F (26-9-9-18)
    20 Caden Zaplitny F (28-4-11-15)
    23 Grady Lane F (28-4-4-8)
    11 Joel Purdom F (4-0-0-0)

    Arrivals:
13 Erik Pastro – F – Trail Smoke Eaters (BCHL)

    ➤ BCHL: 161 GP, 47 G, 65 A, 112 Pts
14 London Hoilett – F – Virden Oil Capitals (MJHL)
    ➤ WHL: 175 GP, 25 G, 19 A, 44 Pts
    ➤ MJHL: 57 G, 32 G, 26 A, 58 Pts

15 Teague McAllister – F – Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL)
    ➤ BCHL: 60 GP, 22 G, 19 A, 41 Pts
    ➤ AJHL: 83 GP, 16 G, 26 A, 42 Pts

    16 Noah Lodoen – F – Toronto Patriots (OJHL)
    ➤ OJHL: 148 GP, 34 G, 53 A, 87 Pts
    18 Nolan Chastko – F/D – Everett Silvertips (WHL)
    ➤ WHL: 131 GP, 16 G, 33 A, 49 Pts
    ➤ MJHL: 108 GP, 50 G, 48 Pts, 98 Pts

19 Brandon Funk – F – Spruce Grove Saints (BCHL)
    ➤ MJHL: 159 GP, 51 G, 54 A, 105 Pts
    ➤ BCHL: 74 GP, 18 G, 20 A, 38 Pts
    ➤ NAHL: 33 GP, 4 G, 10 A, 14 Pts

    29 Hayden Wheddon – F – Niverville Nighthawks (MJHL)
    ➤ WHL: 54 GP, 4 G, 5 A, 9 Pts
    ➤ MJHL: 154 GP, 63 G, 78 A, 141 Pts
    ➤ MMJHL: 3 GP, 0 G, 1 A, 1 Pts

    Departures:
    18 Jonny Hooker F (28-10-11-21)
    14 Blake Swetlikoff (28-6-8-14)
    26 Andrew Boucher F (18-2-7-9)
    28 Codey Behun F (24-3-2-5)
    19 Jackson Arpin F (26-3-2-5)
    29 Michael King F (28-2-2-4)
    25 Ethan Dekay F (9-1-3-4)
    16 Mitchell Joss F (6-0-1-1)
    12 Cameron Trimble F (1-0-0-0)
    10 Miguel Bouvier F (3-0-0-0)

Of the new recruits, Hoilett and Wheddon join Chastko with some WHL experience. They went back to Junior A for an OA season. Of the departures, Hooker was 1st or 2nd line, Swetlikoff was 3rd line at the end of season, Behun, Arpin, and King were checkers, and Boucher was in-and-out of the line-up. Dekay, Joss, Trimble, and Bouvier combined for one goal and not a lot of ice time. I would guess that the recruits should be able to exceed the output of the departed players.

    Preview: October 2-4, 2026: MANITOBA at U.S.A.

    MANITOBA BISONS (2025-26: 12-13-3, 6th in CW, 3-1-0, OHT35 #n/a)
    MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS (2025-26: 22-11-7, 1st in CCHA, 0-0-0, USCHO #18, NPI #13)
    ST. THOMAS TOMMIES (2025-26: 21-12-5, 3rd in CCHA, 0-0-0, USCHO #23, NPI #16)
    NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING HAWKS (2025-26: 29-10-1, 1st in NCHC, 0-0-0, USCHO #4, NPI #2)

Friday, October 2nd at 12:00 CDT at Mankato, MN
Saturday, October 3rd at 6:00 CDT at St. Paul, MN
Sunday, October 4th at 3:00 CDT at Grand Forks, ND

This the final weekend of the pre-season. The Bisons are off to the States, Bedrock U and Holy Trinity are facing ACAC opponents, and the remaining six teams are paired off in local derby encounters.

The Bison weekend includes three games in three days against upper echelon NCAA opponents. They all had great records last year, and are expected to repeat those performances in the pre-season forecasted rankings.

On Friday, the Bisons face the Minnesota State Mavericks. In 2025-26, they were first in the CCHA and beat St. Thomas in the CCHA final. They went to the final 16 teams at the NCAA nationals, where they lost to Western Michigan 3-1. The Bisons lost to them 6-1 last year, 4-1 in 2000, and in 1992 had a tie and an OTL.

On Saturday, it’s either a “game” or “scrimmage” against the St. Thomas Tommies. How ironic that two St. Thomas Universities in Minnesota and New Brunswick both nicknamed their teams “Tommies”. I wonder if these guys answer to the name “Pids”? Anyhow, they lost to MSU in the CCHA final and have now switched conferences to join UND in the NCHC. In prior encounters, the Tommies won 4-2 in 2024 and the Bisons won 6-4 in 2025. After posting a score on Instagram, the 2025 game disappeared from all records as it was recorded as a scrimmage. Let’s see if this one counts!

Then on Sunday, it is back to the early season game at The Ralph. The Bisons have never fared well in these games, often getting better results against equal or better teams than the “Fighting Sioux” may have had at the time. UND has a lifetime lead of 29-1. One of these years, I’ll have to make it back to the Forks to see that building.

I was hoping to have heard some news about that 9-8 win over Regina happened last Saturday afternoon. So far, nothing!

    ELSEWHERE IN THE CW

    REGINA COUGARS (2025-26: 6-22-0, 8th in CW, 1-2-1, OHT35 #n/a)
    SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (2025-26: 19-7-2, 3rd in CW, won playoffs, 5-2-0, OHT35 #n/a)

This exhibition version of the Battle of Saskatchewan wraps up the pre-season in Banjoland. Friday’s game is in Saskatown and Saturday’s is in Big River (220 km north) at the Jim Neilson Sports Complex. The latter is a new facility built in 2022, named after a Big River native and former New York Ranger. Check out the video!

After sweeping the European opposition, the Banjo-Mutts have split with both Calgary and Alberta. Meanwhile, the Banjo-Cats have only played the Bisons.

    ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (2025-26: 11-13-4, 7th in CW, 5-1-0, OHT35 #n/a)
    MACEWAN GRIFFINS (2025-26: 12-11-5, 5th in CW, 4-0-0, OHT35 #n/a)

This is a home-and-home battle of Edmontown. Thus far, these teams are two pleasant surprises with a combined 9-1-0 record. This is the first game against a CW team for The Family Guys. Their toughest game so far was at OTW against Augustana of the ACAC. They also have swept three games against OUA teams (Waterloo, TMU, and Toronto). The Evil Monkeys have an OTW against Red Deer Poly and followed with their own win over Augustana. Their sweep of UBC raised a few eyebrows, and their split with Saskatchewan got nods of approval.

    MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (2025-26: 20-6-2, 2nd in CW, 2-1-1, OHT35 #n/a)
    U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (2025-26: 23-2-3, 1st in CW, 2-2-2, OHT35 #n/a)

These two were the top two in the CW a year ago, before both lost to Saskatchewan in the playoffs. Yet both are kind of 50/50 this pre-season. The T-irds are not necessarily playing poorly. The stats indicate that they have been effective at bombarding opposing goaltenders with shots, yet they have been unable to cash in. Could be just bad luck. The Bluegars have wins over Calgary, Waterloo (OUA), a SOL/tie against Alaska-Anchorage and a loss to Alaska-Fairbanks.

    S.A.I.T. TROJANS (2025-26: 13-3-1-7, 2nd in ACAC, won playoffs, 0-1-0
    CALGARY DINOSAURS (2025-26: 19-8-1, 4th in CW, 2-2-0, OHT35 #n/a)

This is just a one-off game between cross-town rivals. SAIT won the ACAC title a year ago, but lost to Augustana 8-1 in their only outing thus far. The ACAC uses a 3-2-1 point system, so their record is listed with four spaces (for 3 point wins, 2 point wins, 1 point losses, and 0 point losses). Bedrock U has thus far split with Saskatchewan, beaten Waterloo (OUA), and lost to MRU.

    N.A.I.T. OOKS (2025-26: 11-1-0-12, 3rd in ACAC, 2-0-0
    TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (2025-26: 4-21-3, 9th in CW, 4-0-0, OHT35 #n/a)

As with SAIT, NAIT’s record is in the 3-2-1 format. They have thus far swept a series against Portage College. Holy Trinity upset UBC to start, then have chalked up serious wins over Victoria and Vancouver Island (twice) of the BCIHL. This series should prove a good test for the Spartans. The Ooks play the Evil Monkeys next weekend.

    September 26, 2026: 9-8? WTF?

    MANITOBA BISONS 9
    REGINA COUGARS 8

Too bad Regina never uploaded a Hockey Tech Summary for this one. I would really like to know how this happened. Was there a load of penalties so that the whole 3rd period was 3-on-3? Did they use soccer nets? Both sides looked to have respectable goaltending when they played in Winnipeg.

The Bisons finish their Canadian pre-season at 3-1-0, and the Banjo-Cats fall to 1-2-1. The Herd is now off to the Excited States for four games in six days before the regular season starts.

    OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

    ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 5
    SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2

After sweeping the opposition in Austria, the Banjo-Mutts have now split back-to-back series in the Great White North. Thus, they are 5-2-0 (2-2-0 against the CW). Meanwhile, the Evil Monkeys are 5-1-0 (3-1-0 against the CW).

    CALGARY DINOSAURS 4
    U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 3
    (in overtime)

    Quick Summary
    Calg: B. Lee (19:53 1st) , L. Hauer (04:52 2nd) , S. Oremba (07:18 2nd) , H. Pakkala (03:08 1st OT)
    UBC: J. Wright (10:16 2nd) , K. Dowhaniuk (06:44 3rd) , B. Schuurman (10:53 3rd)
Goal: Calg: Pyne (46 shots, 43 saves); UBC: Gee (20 shots, 16 saves)

Good thing I was able to see the summary. The T-irds outshot Bedrock U 46-20. The Dinos amassed a 3-0 lead, on very few shots, 7 minutes into the 2nd period. Is there a goaltending issue in Lotus Land? There were eight roughing penalties and two misconducts in this one.

UBC is now 2-2-2, with tonight’s “point” being their first against non-TWU and BCIHL opposition. The Dinos are 3-3-0 (2-3-0 against the CW) and a win over the OUA’s Waterloo.

    MACEWAN GRIFFINS 6
    TORONTO VARSITY BLUES 3

    Quick Summary
    Mac: E. Mercer (19:38 1st) , E. Sundar (01:24 2nd) , E. Sundar (08:15 3rd) , V. Scott (08:35 3rd) , M. Gauld (08:55 3rd) , J. Szabo (17:54 3rd)
    Tor: R. Hlusiak (05:02 1st) , I. Holt (18:06 1st) , D. Wightman (12:50 3rd)
Goal: Mac: Onyskiw (31 shots, 28 saves); Tor: Surzycia (18 shots, 16 saves), Fairlie L (18 shots, 15 saves)

The Family Guys completed their sweep of The Big Lemon. The Blahs took a 2-0 lead, but that was followed by 5 straight goals for MacEwan, including 3 goals in 40 seconds of the 3rd period. This makes for a giggity-giggity 4-0-0 record for MacEwan, without having played anybody in the CW. This has also been a rough pre-season for the OUA. The record stands 5-0-0 for the CW, or 0-4-1 from the OUA POV.

    MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 0
    ALASKA FAIRBANKS NANOOKS 5

I listened to the end of this game by on-line radio. The live stats link was not operating. One thing I learned is that Alaskans pronounce “Nanooks” as NAN-iks. The radio guys said that the shots-on-goal were 23-22 in favour of the Bluegars. They credited their goaltender, Tyler Shea, who has now shut-out everybody for 170 minutes of play. The Bluegars are now 2-1-1 in pre-season, with only one game played against CW opposition (a win over Calgary).

September 25, 2026: BISONS WIN IN REGINA

    MANITOBA BISONS 4
    REGINA COUGARS 3

    Links:
    ➤ CW: https://men.canadawest.hockeytech.com/stats/game-center/5273%5D Game Centre

    Quick Summary
    Man: L. Brennan (13:26 1st) , L. Brennan (10:18 2nd) , L. Hoilett (08:05 3rd) , B. Funk (10:27 3rd)
    Reg: B. Roulette (10:33 1st) , L. Holoien (14:11 2nd) , K. Runke (07:41 3rd)
Goal: Man: Perreault (22 shots, 19 saves), Reg: Cunningham (20 shots, 18 saves); Hawryluk L (16 shots, 14 saves)

Great effort by Regina in getting the stats uploaded to the Hockey Tech Game Centre. Newcomer Justin Perreault got the start in the Bison goal. The Herd dressed 22 players and the only scratches were goaltender Braden Holt and defenceman Evan Toth. Also, newcomer London Hoilett did not play last weekend but scored a goal in this one. The Bisons are now 2-1-0 and the Banjo-Cats fall to 1-1-1.

    OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

    ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 0
    SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2

All we have here is the score from Cold Lake. It was the first loss for the Evil Monkeys (now 4-1-0) and the Banjo-Mutts elevate to 5-1-0.

    CALGARY DINOSAURS 4
    U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 7

    Quick Summary
    Calg: H. Pakkala (08:06 1st) , H. Pakkala (10:58 2nd) , J. Poole (17:43 2nd) , G. Schmidt (15:26 3rd)
    UBC: J. Williams (00:23 1st) , Z. Nicholson (05:41 1st) , A. Fraser (06:46 1st) , J. Ruthven (18:01 1st) , Z. Nicholson (06:09 2nd) , B. Schuurman (18:33 2nd) , J. Ruthven (02:23 3rd)
Goal: Calg: Tetachuk L (22 shots, 16 saves), Pyne (8 shots, 7 saves); UBC: Schwebius (32 shots, 28 saves)

Like Regina, the folks at UBC deserve credit for uploading the stats. The T-irds needed this win over a decent team. I know it’s only exhibition, but they had no beat a CW team. There were 61 PIMs in this one. They are now 2-2-1, whilst the Dinos are now 2-3-0.

    MACEWAN GRIFFINS 4
    TORONTO METROPOLITAN BOLD 3
    (in a shootout)
I did a quick count and the OUA is now 1-6-2 against the rest. I am surprised by that. All I have here is the score so I cannot say much. The Family Guys are now 3-0-0, with two of those wins in extra time. The Mets are 2-0-1, and they also have an OTW.

    MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 3
    ALASKA ANCHORAGE SEAWOLVES 4
    (in a shootout)

The Americans put this down as a 3-3 tie because they don’t credit shootouts. The live links weren’t working. However, the video was shown on YouTube, free of charge. This was on very late due to Alaskan Time, so maybe the game story will be up on Saturday. I’ll count it as an OTL, meaning the Bluegars are now 2-0-1.

    VANCOUVER ISLAND MARINERS 1
    TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 5

All I got is the score here. Holy Trinity is now 4-0-0 for the first time I recall, albeit with the last three wins against the BCIHL. They don’t play tomorrow, then wrap up the pre-season against NAIT of the ACAC.

    September 24, 2026: PRE-WEEKEND NEWS

    TRINITY WESTERN
Holy Trinity released their usual all-sports weekend preview. Not much new information. It does confirm that they have just the one game this weekend, where they host Vancouver Island of the BCIHL.

    SASKATCHEWAN
The Banjo-Mutts are getting involved with blind hockey. They had a deaf hockey tournament in Winnipeg a few years back. I was behind some Slovakians in line at a sub store. I would like to see what blind hockey looks like. That’s ironic, I suppose.

    MOUNT ROYAL ALASKA TRIP
The Bluegars’ hosts uploaded preview articles. These articles deal with the joint visitors, Mount Royal and the University of Mary. Mary is called “The Marauders” and their logo is a pirate dude with an eyepatch. In my opinion, they should be called “The Little Lambs”. Both the Seawolves’ and Nanooks’ articles have links to follow along.

Preview: September 25-26, 2026: MANITOBA at REGINA

    MANITOBA BISONS (2025-26: 12-13-3, 6th in CW, 1-1-0, OHT35 #n/a)
    REGINA COUGARS (2025-26: 12-13-3, 6th in CW, 1-0-1, OHT35 #n/a)

Friday, September 25th at 7:00 CST/8:00 CDT at The Co-operators Centre, Regina
Saturday, September 26th at 3:00 CST/4:00 CDT at The Co-operators Centre, Regina

    ➤ GoBisons: https://gobisons.ca/sports/mens-ice-hockey/roster?view=2

The Bisons have some roster movement. There are three departures, one arrival, and three alighting at the Moose camp.

The arrival is 19-year old goaltender Justin Perreault. I’ll be doing a dive into the Bison roster since it is now posted. (Along with UBC and Alberta.) The Wenatchee Wild had his WHL rights, after he was drafted by the Winnipeg Ice before they moved. Last year he started with the Dauphin Kings before being dealt to the Winnipeg Blues. He was on the MJHL All-Star Team. The Spokane Chiefs acquired his WHL rights and called him up to be their backup goaltender in late February.

The departed (from the official roster at least), are forward Miguel Bouvier, defenceman Cole Unger, and goaltender Austin Dubinsky. Bouvier played last weekend against Regina, and scored a goal. He would be entering his 2nd year after playing three games last year, with no goals or assists. Unger and Dubinsky are new recruits coming in from the Junior A ranks. It is always possible that there are academic/enrolment issues affecting the eligibility of one or more of those players.

There are three rookie forwards at the Moose camp, namely Brandon Funk, Teague McAllister, and Erik Pastro. This is a quasi-tradition each year. The players selected are usually undrafted WHLers getting a second look and/or veterans with a track record. These players are all rookies. It looks like the Moose need a full roster. These players were amongst 14 players signed to try-outs on Monday to supply a roster of 22. The players the Moose would be counting on are still in the Jets’ camp, or at least were until the Tuesday night exhibition game. I would not expect the three Bisons to be playing in the AHL this year.

All the movement leaves the Bison roster with just 24 names, 3 goaltenders, 7 defencemen, and 14 forwards. They could really use a couple more names, with at least one being a defenceman.

    ELSEWHERE IN THE CW

    ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (2025-26: 11-13-4, 7th in CW, 4-0-0, OHT35 #n/a)
    SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (2025-26: 19-7-2, 3rd in CW, 4-1-0, OHT35 #n/a)

This neutral site series in Cold Lake, Alberta is becoming an annual tradition for these two teams.

The Evil Monkeys have now posted their roster page, and I shall soon delve into that. They swept their ACAC opponents (as expected) then swept UBC (which was not expected). They got caught up in the exodus of WHL grads to the NCAA last summer. Have they now bounced back? Or is UBC not what they were touted? The Banjo-Mutts are defending champs and should prove a stern test. These two sides have the best pre-season records in the CW thus far.

    CALGARY DINOSAURS (2025-26: 19-8-1, 4th in CW, 2-2-0, OHT35 #n/a)
    U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (2025-26: 23-2-3, 1st in CW, 1-2-1, OHT35 #n/a)

Both of these teams have wobbled out of training camp. The Dinos were blitzed by Saskatchewan, but then salvaged a split. A loss to MRU was then followed by a win over Waterloo of the OUA. So they seem to have somewhat found their form. UBC is confusing. A shoot-out loss to Trinity and win over U-Vic started things. Shrug that off. But then comes a sweep at the hands of Alberta. I’ll want to see how they rank with a team like the Dinos.

The Family Guys are going to The Big Lemon to continue their non-CW pre-season. They beat Waterloo of the OUA and Augustana of the ACAC. Inter-conference play is the best part of the pre-season IMO.

The Bluegars had solid results last weekend to start the season. Now it’s time to go north. Way north! The Alaskan teams have live links for exhibition games for those who follow the Bluegars. The Alaskan teams also play the University of Mary (ACHA) on the dates opposite MRU.

The Alaskan teams are independent teams, i.e. they do not play in a conference. The other independent NCAA teams are Lindenwood, Long Island, and Stonehill. The Nanooks won a tournament between these teams for the United Collegiate Cup. The Nanooks beat the Seawolves 6-out-of-8 to win the Alaska Governor’s Cup. That competition took up almost all of February for both sides after a weekend series in January. Basically, they love it when somebody makes the trip up north.

    VANCOUVER ISLAND MARINERS (2025-26: 17-2-1, 1st in BCIHL, 3-1-0)
    TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (2025-26: 4-21-3, 9th in CW, 3-0-0, OHT35 #n/a)

The Mariners are reigning BCIHL champions and have so far beaten SFU twice and split with Adrian College’s ACHA team. This is a great time of the season for Holy Trinity. They get to play some games as the favourite! That shoot-out win over UBC set off a celebration. The convincing sweep of U-Vic of the BCIHL was expected.

An odd dispute has arisen between VIU administration and their club hockey and baseball teams. Those are clubs, not varsity programs sponsored by the institution. The clubs were told they must cease using VIU branding after this season. The BCIHL has never before had this issue. When Trinity Western was in the BCIHL, they started as the “Titans” when they were a club, and became the “Spartans” when they were granted varsity status.

I have all the scores from Saturday’s games now, so here’s the Bison summary and all the scores. Several USports teams are not on dilatory on updating their Schedule & Results page, they are also abandoning Facebook and X/Twitter. Even on Instagram, they are just posting “stories” which disappear, rather than an actual post.

September 19, 2026: PENALTIES KILL BISONS

    REGINA COUGARS 5
    MANITOBA BISONS 2

I am awaiting scores from out-of-town, so I’ll post the summary later. In brief, the Bisons added Ben Bonni to Friday’s line-up and Braden Holt took his turn in net. This was full of penalties including a pair of 4-minute assessments against Lucas Brennan and Kaycee Coyle. The Banjo-Cats had two powerplay goals, and then took command on a pair of even-strength softies. The 3rd period saw no goals until a late empty-netter. The penalty parade also ended, in what was a very mundane period of prototypical exhibition hockey.

There are no posted summaries/box scores, so here is what I compiled:

    Summary
    1st 15:37 Man: 18 Chastko (9 Allarie & 17 Bruce)
    2nd 3:41 Reg: 29 Roulette (4 Kjerhus)
    2nd 10:34 Reg: 18 Whyte (21 Borysiuk)

    3rd 12:42 Man: 10 Bouvier (28 Longo)
    3rd 19:13 Man: 17 Bruce (13 Pastro & 8 Toth) EN
    OT 3:28 Man: 23 Lane (18 Chastko)

    Goaltenders:
Man: Kieper (34 shots, 31 saves)
Reg: Hawryluk (16 shots, 15 saves), Ernst (15 shots, 12 saves)

    By period:
    Goals:
    Manitoba 1-0-2-1 = 4
    Regina 0-2-1-0 = 3

    Shots:
    Manitoba 10-9-9-3 = 31
    Regina 8-16-10-0 = 34

The Bison roster page was updated in stages throughout the day. When I left for the game, the link was there for 2026-27, but the page was for 2025-26. Upon arrival at the rink, most names were added/deleted as required. I pieced together the line-ups as best I could. Regina’s uniforms often make it hard to distinguish “6s” from “8s”.

The best line-up news was seeing that Evan Toth was back for a 5th year. Last year’s best defenceman, Luke Brenton, turned pro. Toth was the 2nd best, so his return stabilizes the blue line.

The Bisons started the game by dominating the Banjo-Cats. They had a 5-0 lead in shots, and the Bluegars only had the puck in the Bison end once in the first ten minutes. As the period progressed, Regina found their form and it was more back-and-forth, but Bison rookie Nolan Chastko notched the only goal. The chippiness was developing throughout.

Regina had the better of the 2nd period, yet both goals were of the “came-out-of-nowhere” variety. Ben Roulette (a rookie from Wayway) tied it up on a breakaway which came about from a neutral zone turnover. Carson Whyte gave the Cats the lead when a cross-ice clearance off the boards prompted the Bison defencemen to simultaneously say “yours”, setting up a golden opportunity.

In the 3rd, the Bisons’ penalties took their toll, as Carson White gave the Cats a 3-1 lead on the powerplay. The two goal lead didn’t last long. Miguel Bouvier (who only played three games last year) recaptured his scoring touch from his days with the Nor-Man Blizzard and made it 3-2. Then, with the empty net, Skylar Bruce converted a passing play from rookie Erik Pastro and veteran Evan Toth.

The Bisons took charge of the 3-on-3, forcing a penalty from the Kittens. On the powerplay, Grady Lane deflected a shot from Chastko for the win.

This was the first game for both sides.

    OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

    ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 5
    U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 1

Nothing but the score from Revelstoke here. UBC must be somewhat concerned of their start. They are 1-1-1, having played last year’s 7th and 9th placed teams, and their only win against the BCIHL. The Evil Monkeys are now 3-0-0, with two ACAC wins last weekend.

    WATERLOO WARRIORS 2
    CALGARY DINOSAURS 3

This evens Bedrock U’s record at 2-2-0 in a rather up-and-down pre-season. Waterloo is now 0-2-0 on their trip through Saudi Alberta.

    VICTORIA VIKINGS 3
    TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS 7

The BCIHL uploads boxscores in pre-season, but they don’t have individual data for non-BCIHL players. The shots were 45-27 in favour of Holy Trinity. The Spartans are now 2-0-0, and the Vikes are 0-2-0.
