He could have refused to waive his NMC and claim he didn’t want to be rental and wanted to retire with his current team.
Only to wait until halfway through the next year to sign with another team then justified it by saying the new team gave him the best chance to win.
yeah, it’s pretty clear his mind was already made up, and that finishing his career in mother Russia was a priority.
