Heading into the Buffalo Sabres regular season schedule, goaltending is a position that will need to show significant improvement over the 2024-25 campaign.
Sabres starting goaltender Ukko-Pekka-Luukonen is now out week to week with a lower-body injury. With opening night rapidly approaching on October 9th, free agent addition Alexander Georgiev will have to be ready when his number is called.
The 29-year-old netminder is looking to get his NHL career back on track this season in Buffalo. Georgiev struggled last season, splitting time in Colorado and San Jose and is working to return to the form he displayed prior to last season. The Sabres have two new netminders on the NHL roster. In addition to Giorgiev, Buffalo also added veteran Alex Lyon on July 1st. Both Georgiev and Lyon have shown an ability to carry a starting netminder’s load in the past.
With Luukonen’s availability uncertain for the start of the season, the Sabres may need both Lyon and Giorgiev to deliver wins.“You try to just do your best everyday,” said Georgiev. “Be sharp and just be ready to play every game.”
Georgiev has seen some playing time in the preseason and appreciates the opportunity he is receiving and being one of four goaltenders in the Buffalo net in the preseason.
With prospect Devon Levi set to return to Rochester, Lyon and Giorgiev will both be looking to deliver for the Sabres when called upon.“You try to just do your best every day be sharp, and just be ready to play every game,” said Georgiev. ”It’s been great to get some game action and get back into it. Obviously, you don’t know what’s happening, so you try to just focus on your things and don’t think too much about the bigger picture.”
Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff knows Georgiev and Lyon will battle and make the most of the challenges ahead.
“I think they have a little bit different styles, both guys” said Ruff. “They’re in a competition probably to say I wanna be the guy, if UPL (Luukkonen) can’t go. I wanna be the guy the coach looks to start game one.”
