KeymasterThe Toronto Maple Leafs made a few moves on Friday and announced an injury to a key player that will impact their opening night roster.
The club announced that center David Kampf and defenseman William Villeneuve have been placed on waivers. Kampf is entering his fifth season with Toronto and is coming off his worst season, scoring only five goals in 59 games. The likelihood of Kampf being claimed is slim since he has another year on his contract at $2.4 million, so his clearing waivers and being sent down to the AHL would clear just over $1 million of that cap hit. This could be the precursor of a deal if the Leafs are willing to kick in a draft pick, add another player, or retain salary to get someone to take the 30-year-old off of their hands.
The interesting thing with this is that the Leafs placed Kampf on waivers the same day that they announced that center Scott Laughton is week-to-week with a lower-body injury. That may be indicative that head coach Craig Berube does not see Kampf as a viable replacement for Laughton, even on a short-term basis. The injury to Laughton does seem to leave the Leafs in a curious position less than a week before the start of the regular season.
Calle Jarnkrok has played center in the past, but not with Toronto. Berube has paired Nicolas Roy and Dakota Joshua on a checking line and likely would not want to break up that tandem. He also may be hesitant to move Max Domi down in the lineup to play center in the bottom six, since he seems to be the best fit to play the right side with Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews.
One possible move could be to shift Steven Lorentz to center and insert Jarnkrok on the wing, or to call up either Jacob Quillan or Luke Haymes to play in a fourth-line role.
Villeneuve, 23, had an excellent season in the AHL with 40 points (4 goals, 36 assists) and is on a two-way deal for the NHL league-minimum $775,000, so he is at risk of being claimed if an NHL club thinks he is ready to make the jump.

ParticipantHi Mike,
Will you be addressing the toxic divisive non hockey political posts? Or are folks trying to get into a hockey season and some hockey talk – going to have to continue and weed through all of the political nonsense that destroyed hockeybuzz?
Thanks. Hopefully you can at least say one way or another.

KeymasterHowdy, I’ve issued a warning in the other thread that this is a forum for Sports Talk, not for political talk. If I see somebody or have someone report to me that someone is bringing up political issues on here, I will simply block them from doing so in the future.

Thank you for doing that. Certainly needed.
