In fairness, I don’t think many people outside of the Jays clubhouse expected this. Still work to do, but what a wild series.

ParticipantVirtually identical first 10 games as last season, and they won the division last year. 1A goalie out, Nylander ailing, Tanev out, and Tre has lots of flexibility for the TDL. Still not panicking, (unlike some).
The problem with being “identical” to last season is even if everything goes exactly like it does last year, guess what? They still lose to Florida and don’t get out of the 2nd round. So, that’d be a failure. The point of this offseason was to improve this team and win something in the shrinking window of opportunity. This team has not improved.
Leafs are failing the eye test right now and are clearly playing way worse than last year with a weak schedule this year. They have no assets to trade and the 2028 1st should be untouchable as this team is teetering on the edge of blowing it up and rebuilding. Robertson is worth nothing. The Leafs have nothing to give up to acquire anybody of significant impact. And if they trade Cowan, Danford and the 2028 1st, they will have a completely empty farm system. So if they gamble on this horse, they’ll lose the farm and probably get garbage in return considering what they gave up last year to get Laughton and Carlo who did fuck all to help the Leafs win the games that mattered.
The Panthers are missing Tkachuck and Barkov right now. If the Leafs were missing Matthews and Knies, they’d be in dead last. Hell, Matthews is playing every game and if it wasn’t for some empty netters, he’d look a lot worse than what his stats show right now.
This PP sucks ass water and won’t get better because Marc Savard is useless as a coach and Rielly is a dog shit PP QB. The defense is older, slower, less organized and more prone to mistakes. Matthews looks lost (especially defensively on most nights) and doesn’t have the same chances he had with Marner, especially on the PP. Tavares is scoring and the team is losing 6-3 and he’s -3. That doesn’t win you shit in the playoffs.
Stolarz has never played more than 34 games and Woll might be coming back from rehab. If the goalies don’t stand on their head, this team is completely fucked.
It’s a castle made of sand and it’s ready to fall back into the sea.

ParticipantThis season is far from over but there isn’t much to suggest it’s going to get better than this as their schedule gets tougher. They have no assets to make trades to improve this team. Maybe they need to do what the Jays did and suck ass this year and then shock everybody next year.
Other than they had the same record this time last year and won the division, they are missing their 1B goalie, willie and Tanev.
Not the end of the world. But the leafs did screw themselves by trading away so many picks and assets. The laughton trade looks worse and worse by the minute.
Another problem for the leafs is Matthews looks like a decent 2nd line center. I think I heard he has 5 5on5 goals since feb 1st. Put him 250th in the league.

It was never going to be a sweep.
But still lots of series left.

The team with the better record (that is in a very tough division), that had the best offence in the League after a slow first month. best defensive team, most comeback wins.
dispatched the yankess pretty easily…shouldnt really be a surprise. but here we areOctober 31, 2025 at 11:31 am #46187Canada Cup

And they are missing Marner, although apparently he was the source of all the problems on the team.
Matthews has 2 empty netters, and 2 tap-ins from passes in his 5 goals. His play is uninspired at best. He would be a 2nd line center on an average team.
Really though, when was the last time we saw him do something fantastic, or even really good.October 31, 2025 at 7:34 pm #46247Dozzer

ParticipantPatience. A lot of injuries and new players learning the system. It takes time. The rest of the Atlantic is also starting slow. Once November rolls around, then teams start showing who they really are. Woll will be back soon as will Tanev. Once the team gets healthy, they’ll start making up those points lost.

Not surprised this series is going to game seven at this point either though, seems right
