Shanahan pushed Lou out the door because he refused go learn from the expert. That was the beginning of the end, already then.

Doughty was always right about this team. 100%.
By “beginning of the end” you mean his demise was expected…..7 years later.

Lou was done, maybe he could have gotten better deals from Marner and matthews….maybe not.
But he made a mess of the Islanders, the contracts he handed out and trades he made…set that team back.
Lou knew exactly what he was brought in for and for how long.

Or a lack of loyalty from Shanahan towards Lou. Shanahan thought he had the boy wonder when he picked Dubas. Or knew he could control him as a puppet GM. He went with the spreadsheets instead of the experience of a multiple time Cup champion HHOF builder.

Lou was manager of the year, at least once if not twice with the NYI. If he stayed, the Leafs would have been better and gone further. Can’t say they’d win for sure but a better chances for sure. He wouldn’t have played games with the stupid contracts or allow the country club to control the team.

I’d bring him back today to rebuild this team properly as hockey president.
My gawd, manager of the year means nothing. Lou signed some horrible deals with Islanders and set that team back. He may have gotten marner and matthews signed for a little less…maybe be probably would have signed some other horrible deals to set the leafs back as well
Engvall for 7 years. My gawd, the worse signing in the past decade.

Don’t get me wrong UG, that’s my point, I’m thinking Shanny called it “his team” too soon, even if he was the president.

Shanny and Lou work together for 3 years with the leafs. I dont think that is too soon for shanny to get in fingers into the team. Also, Lou was hired to be a mentor for only a short time, he knew that and has said as much.
Impossible to say if the team would be better or worse had lou been GM…but based on the contracts and trades lou made in NYI…..not sure the leafs would have been better. Maybe a lower cap hit for marner and matthews.

I think it’s as simple as it gets; Shanahan wanted complete control and having Lou in the organization was a threat. If things went poorly, ownership would eventually remove Shanahan and promote Lou. Instead, Shanahan wanted a puppet GM and ownership, as ignorant as they ever have been about hockey, allowed it. Dubas was his pet. Treliving was hired to be the same until Shanahan got fired. And as we can see, Treliving is a glorified assistant GM who is running this team even further into the ground than Shanahan did.
You watch too much daytime reality tv, creating drama where none exist. Lou wasnt a threat to Shanny…he was there to help and mentor the him and the next potential GM.
Lou wasnt hired to be the full time GM for many years…he knew that. He was there 3 years, it time for shanny to make his mark.
Besides, who gives a fuck about Lou, he left 7 years ago.

I do agree, that Tre isnt a great gm. He’s burke 2.0….wasting assets on 3rd/4th liners, bringing in “size” but not toughness or grit. ITs great that Carlo and Joshua are big guys….but if they allow Zadorov to have his way with their teammates, they are pretty much useless.
Last years trade deadline could haunt the leafs and tre for many years. The deal for Rasmus fell apart so he overpaid for Carlo. Bad trade.

Outshot 37-15.

88 to 34 in attempts. On home ice. Disgusting.

I concur

The Leafs organization envisioned a league that was changing. They expected an evolution towards speed and skill, where a potent powerplay would keep rough/rugged play in check. Management in the new NHL would lean heavily on analytics as the new direction would remove a lot of the intangibles that traditionally were important for success, particularly in the playoffs. Dubas fit the vision. Lou did not.

What they got was a league that did not change in the slightest and a team with not nearly enough of the heart/grit/caresi required to win. Then they got F’d over by the stagnant cap which meant that their overpaid players didn’t become good deals as they aged. They were messed up by this worse than any other team.

They then proceeded to go down a dark hole of throwing away draft picks and prospects every year to pick up “grit” guys to hopefully bring that element to the team. They decimated their farm and their draft capital. The problem is when your top earners and “best” players are the ones who don’t have enough heart, then players brought in at the end of the season will change absolutely nothing.

Now, they simply have the “wrong” best players. They aren’t good enough. In fact, they are getting worse. Nylander is about the same as Kessel; good piece, not a leader. Matthews game gets worse every year. He is an average 2nd line center now paid like a top-5 player in the league. Rielly should have been gone before his last contract. Tanev is way past his prime and Tavares, as steady as he is, is just not enough to lead this team to any success. The rest of the players are just interchangeable, average NHLers.

I would seriously consider blowing it all up. I do not think this iteration of the team will ever win anything.

Agreed on all points.
Marner wasnt the only problem…almost the whole team was the problem. I feel like Matthews doesnt have what it takes to lead a team or be “the guy”.
I hated wasting 1st rounders every year to try and “go for it” and now they have an old often injured backend thats only gonna get slower each year.
Problem is Burke 2.0 traded away TWO 1st rounders for a 4th liner and 4th/5th dman, horrible trades. This now means the leafs cannot rebuild for the next two years as they simply have none of their 1st rounders. Burke 2.0 needs to be told he cannot trade another 1st or simply fired. Which I think if the leafs miss the playoffs, he will be fired.

I honestly wouldnt mind the leafs missing the playoffs if they had their 1st rounder, Ive been all in for taking a step back one year to move out some players and get some young talent in at the draft (mid to high 1st rounder)….but every year I was crapped on for the idea.
Now, the leafs are really screwed. Goaltending made this team and D look good last year, this year our goalies have been crap. The team has nothing in the cupboard to help make any significant change and honestly I wouldnt want Tre to make anymore trades anyway. He’s not very good at it.
So now we gotta wait until the 2027 off season for any type of rebuild…which wont come anyway, leafs arent trading matthews and nylander.
But Tre has really screwed this team.

Ah well. I’ve lost so much interest in this team, it doesnt really matter. This franchise just can never get its shit together, cant ever get over any hump.

BUT

With all that said…..its still early, things can hopefully change. Players can get healthy, Stolarz and woll could remember how to play in net, matthews could look like a top 5 player again and not some 20 – 35th center which hes been for the past year and a bit, this team could learn to play defense again.
Still early.
The East is pretty meh, the leafs are only 2pts out of playoff spot and 4pts out of 1st in the Atlantic. Its not the end of world yet.

The Maple Leafs have announced that Joseph “The Glass” Woll has been activated and will be called up.

Artur Akhtyamov has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies.

Auston Matthews has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 11 2024

And that Easton Cowan has been recalled from the Marlies.

Leafs fucking suck so far this year. Offence is decent, but defensively they’re absolutely fucking TERRIBLE…

And the team is STILL .500. Things will improve when Tanev/Stolie/Laughton/Matty return to form. Book it.

What signing JT has been so far, 23pts in 18 games for $4.5m. Who could hate this signing?
