Tuesday, the Rangers trimmed 11 players from their roster. Most prominent among them, and the one that has caused the most chatter, was Brennan Othmann. New York then had 29 players left on the training camp roster with Opening Night less than a week away.

Over the next several days, the Rangers cut down to 14 forwards, seven defensemen, and two goalies, which could be the Opening night roster. This includes J.T. Miller and Artemi Panarin, each of whom remained banged up. New York reached that number Friday, with Scott Morrow and Gabe Perreault getting sent down.

Othmann, a first-round pick in 2021, has not had a great camp. In addition, his prospect status has been surpassed by Gabe Perreault and potentially Noah Laba, each of whom has stood out in camp and remains on the roster. On the wing, Perreault, and Brett Berard, who is also still with the parent club and has a shot at breaking the roster, are likely in front of Othmann.

Coach Mike Sullivan was very clear in what he wants to see from Othmann, who in the past four camps, was among the final cuts. His departure prior to that stage this year is somewhat telling. Othmann looked like he was caught in between on the ice, not knowing when to react or when to read, as well as not relying on his talent. He needs to basically say screw it, within the team structure, and just play, use his talent. In addition, check the boxes of what Sullivan wants, noted below, to earn a call-up. Despite him not progressing as desired and his prospect status having dimmed a little, it’s still too early to write the epitaph for Othmann, who was the 16th overall pick in 2021.

“Otter and I have had a number of conversations even before training camp started, starting around the Lehigh Valley [Rookies] Tournament,” Sullivan said. “A lot of discussion we have has been on conscientious play, attention to detail, defensively away from the puck, playing within structure, having some predictability, reliability and dependability around his game.

“That’s essentially what it boils down to, the attention to detail in all zones on both sides of the puck, but in particular on the defensive side. Those are conversations I’ve had with Otter.”

As said above, the lineup is still not set in stone. Miller and Panarin are expected to be okay for Opening Day (or so we hope). When the first moves were made on Tuesday, the view of many, which proved to be accurate, was that the vets would open the season on the roster, as they all likely would initially be lost if put on waivers.

That meant Conor Sheary, on a PTO, Jonny Brodzinski, and Jusso Parsinnen will all open the season in New York. On the flip side, Pereeault and Morrow, with Matthew Robertson as the 7th d-man, would start the season in Hartford, which proved to be accurate. In Perreault’s case, I mildly get it, since he could use time in Hartford. In Morrow’s case, not so much as he is likely better than Carson Soucy and Urho Vaakanainen, but contracts and cap hits seem to matter more. If a change needs to be made, since, as Sullivan said, “rosters are fluid,” a swap could happen quickly.

Noah Laba has played his way into the final evaluation. Brett Berard may be hanging around until more is known about Miller’s and Panarin’s status. But Laba has a clear chance to break camp, evidenced by the line combinations in practice on Friday, where Sheary is a placeholder for Panarin.

    Cuylle – Miller – Zib
    Sheary – Trocheck – Laf
    Pärssinen – Laba – Raddysh
    Edström – Carrick – Rempe

Good look at Matt Rempe’s training by Vince Mercogliano. The work Rempe did this summer with Ben Prentiss has been noticeable in camp. He is bigger, stronger and quicker, which should make the fourth line even better.

Most likely Laba and Berard despite their outstanding play during training camp and the preseason games are going to be sent to Hartford to start the season.

The Rangers are afraid that if they try to send Brodzinski, Parssinen or Raddysh to Hartford that none would clear waivers without being claimed.

Both Berard and Laba are waivers exempt

Really hope Laba gets to stay up and play. Parsinnen, and even moreso, Raddyish don’t deserve it over him. Raddyish straight up sucks

Laba makes the team. Berard sent down. Sheary signs a 1 year 2 way deal for league minimum

1 more cut has to happen. Think Brodzinski is going to get waived, but we shall see
