Stamkos is a good comparable for Tavares. Both had solid productive seasons in their contract years. Briesbois lowballed Stamkos because he knew Stamkos was in decline. Stamkos left to chase money and ended up in Nashville without Kucherov to feed him delicious Royal Road passes on the power play. Look at what happened. His production plummeted. He went on a brief heater towards the end of the season that made his numbers look slightly less terrible, but for most of the year he was caved in and provided almost nothing.
Tavares is in a similar spot. He no longer drives play and needs elite linemates to prop him up. He’s pretty much a 2W or 3W at this point in his career. If Tavares will stay for $3-5m on term less than 3 years, then keep him. Put him on the wing and use him on special teams.
Marner is a fucking gone pecan. May as well start dream-spending that cap space now because he’s on the first plane out of Toronto. Leafs aint getting back squat either – just to add insult to injury. No sign and trade. I hope I’m wrong.

Those who like Marner and want him to stay are probably in line for disappointment. My gut tells me that he will test free agency and there is a team(s) willing to back up the bank truck for him.
Like Fiddy said above – letting Marner walk is not the mistake, it is the culmination of a decade-long mistake.
I think Tree should do everything in his power to squeeze some assets from this situation. Sign and trade if possible. If not, learn from the mistake of losing an elite (but soft) player for nothing. Epic fail.
Paying Marner $14m – also an epic fail.
This is a no win situation for the Leafs. There is no Marner outcome that will make all sides happy at this point.
