ParticipantI have been a pro-Dubas guy since he got here, but these last few months have really left a sour taste.
-Completely fumbled the trade deadline by not selling more and weakening this team. As I said all season, there is 0 point in competing in March and April in the position the Penguins were in. They should have traded guys and maximized playing time for younger guys and gotten a better draft pick. We even lost a few more games in that stretch, we would have been picking between Hagens and Martone.
-The draft picks last night were bad value versus the consensus. These scouts see these guys a lot more than I do obviously, but it seems we reached on every pick and most of them, other than our #11 pick, have low ceilings. Not the kind of guys I’d go for.
-The draft didnt fall to us perfectly, but we still had 2 good options at 11 and 12. We got neither and moved back in a top heavy draft. If the Flyers really wanted #12, tell them you wanted their #1 next season and test them.
This reminds me when Toronto had 12 picks in 2020 and 0 of them have played in the NHL 5 years later. His draft has always been a red flag.
All im going to say, is that Dubas had better knock it out of the park when some of these trades. Very underwhelming couple of months from him IMO.

ParticipantAfter reading more about our 11th pick, I get it. Seems like he is a really good player who is underrated because of his size.
That’s the tragic MO of Dubas. Small forwards and defensemen that never turn out. The Leafs under Dubas wasted so many picks on small, talented players who never turned into much.
Yea that seems to be his thing. The analytics seem to dictate a lot. Our 11th pick has a much higher % probability of becoming a star in the NHL than I would’ve guessed, but seems like he targets guys being overlooked for size.
And I say that as the Penguins just drafted a 6’5 monster lol.

ParticipantAnother pick Im not understanding. Dubas has been all over the place tonight with these picks. I liked Malcolm Spence better, but I dont really think we targeted the high ceiling guys.

ParticipantGood pick.
Its funny, if we had traded up 2 and gotten McQueen or even selected an Eklund, I would say this has been fantastic.

ParticipantId like Malcolm Spence at 22. Hes a Penguin fan, good size, plays well, seems like he might be more NHL ready than most guys around here. Some mocks had him in the 11-15 range.

ParticipantIf the Penguins had taken the Islanders guys at 11 and 12, i wouldve been happy.
Big day for the Islanders.

ParticipantI told you all that this is why you dont want to win meaningless games in March and April lol. Should’ve had a top 7 pick.

ParticipantI bet they traded down to get more time to trade the picks for players.
Im not angry at the pick, at the end of the day, I have no idea if he will work. I just laugh when i hear that Dubas wanted to make this team bigger and harder to play against. so much for that.

ParticipantSeems Kindel is a pretty polarizing player. Some had him top 10 others had him 20+.
I stand by what I said. I think Dubas wanted a top flight player and he couldnt get it done. Thats disappointing.
I actually like the trade. 12 for 22 and 31? That’s good value.

ParticipantDamn, got to admit, disappointed by this turn of events. The players were there for the Penguins and we did nothing about it.
Hopefully our two picks kill it, guessing Eklund will be one of them, but still disappointed by Dubas tonight.

ParticipantFlyers grab Porter Martone. That sucks, we will hate playing against him. That’s why you be proactive. Go get him instead of sitting on your hands, Dubas.

ParticipantI hate this format. The draft in Vegas at the Sphere was one of the cooler off the ice things they’ve done, insane they completely 180’d and moved in this direction. Seems there are a lot of people within the NHL grumbling about it. Doubt it sticks
Dont try to copy other leagues, make it your own. The yearly draft at the Sphere in Vegas would be sick.

ParticipantToday could be a generational day for the Penguins. Today could be a “we let the players come to us” kind of day. I think Dubas has to be aggressive today and fight for quality over quantity. The longer you let the train off the train tracks, the harder it is to get back on course. If we draft two development guys who are 2-3 years each, you are talking about a pretty long term rebuild that has no promise of success.
Im targeting the #4 pick. Its likely that Misa is there. He’s the kind of guy you go get. It will be expensive, I’d personally move Rakell and Rust for the right deal to attract more assets. Yohe said today he doesnt see a scenario where Dubas moves both 1sts to move up for one pick.
With the #12 pick, I’m letting the first 6-7 picks play out. I have a feeling one of Martone or Hagens falls. I think teams will prioritize center and Hagens seems to be the odd guy out in recent weeks. Moving from 12 to 7/8 wouldnt be as expensive, you could probably do it with our 2nd/3rd picks over the next few years.
I dont want us to pick at 11 and 12 and have Dubas say that they were patient and let the picks fall to them. That’s BS imo. Dont let this team fall into the constant rebuild trap.
You draft two high end guys tonight, likely you are still pretty poor next year. Get these two guys tonight, get a good pick next season, and all of a sudden, you have your next generational core.

ParticipantGentlemen – Im back. Took a little for me to get registered here, but glad a number of you have come over as well. Seems like HockeyBuzz is dying. Less and less blogs and less and less comments on those blogs.
Someone on HockeyBuzz posted the following trade for Pittsburgh/Chicago:
Karlsson (50% retained)
Rakell
#11for
#3
#25My first thought was it wasnt a terrible offer.
