Before free agent season: Flurry of news (June 30 and earlier)
Monday, the day before free agency, saw a lot of activity in its own right. Perhaps most notably, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Mitch Marner’s rights to the Vegas Golden Knights for defenseman Nicolas Roy. According to multiple reports, Marner agreed to an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Golden Knights. Toronto received center Nicolas Roy in the trade.
Additionally, in order to clear cap space for Marner, Vegas traded Nicolas Hague to the Nashville Predators for forward Colton Sissons and defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. Nashville retains half of Sissons’ salary. Hague promptly signed a four-year, $22 million contact with Nashville.
In a separate transaction, Toronto acquired forward Matias Macelli from the Utah Mammoth for a conditional third-round pick in the 2027 Draft.
Other June 30th news and notes
- Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad signed an eight-year extension to remain with the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.
- Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov signed a seven-year extension with an $8.5 million cap hit.
- Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane signed a one-year extension. It’s an incentive-laden deal, carrying a $3 million base salary and performance bonuses that max out at an additional $4 million. The lowest-hanging fruit: a $2.5 million bonus for playing in at least 10 games during the regular season.
- The Carolina Hurricanes acquired goaltender Cayden Primeau from the Montreal Canadiens for a 2026 7th-round pick.
- The Minnesota Wild acquired forward Vladimir Tarasenko from the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations.
- The LA Kings signed Andrei Kuzmenko to a one-year contract extension for $4.3 million.
- The Philadelphia Flyers declined to tender a qualifying offer to Jakob Pelletier, making him an unrestricted free agent. The club also did not extend qualifying offers to Lehigh Valley Phantoms players Elliot Desnoyers or Zayde Wisdom.
- Vegas defenseman Alex Pietrangelo is taking a long-term leave of absence for health reasons. Both of the player’s hips have chronic issues and he’d require dual surgeries with a very long rehab periods thereafter. Pietrangelo is not retiring officially. However, his first priority is to see if he can return to a normal quality of life off the ice.
