How Are US-Based PWHL Teams Shaping Up?

The PWHL Season begins this Friday as four of the league teams drop the puck, including . Teams were required to reduce rosters to 23 players to start the 3rd season for the league and we’re down to the wire on Training Camp Cuts! How are the US teams looking ahead of opening day?

Minnesota Frost

The two time PWHL defending champion Minnesota Frost were all business in their Training Camp mission this year. Given that status, there is some pressure, but with the upheaval of expansion, they have had to deal with similar change and new faces as the rest of the PWHL.

In an effort to get the band back together as well as enhance depth scoring, they traded 3rd round draft pick forward Anna Segedi to the Vancouver Goldeneyes for Denisa Křížová, a key member of those championship teams for the Frost. They had released forwards Alyssa Machado, Madison Mashuga, defender Cameron Sikich on Tuesday. None of these players especially stood out in the scrimmages last week vs the NY Sirens.

The Frost rounded out their roster, adding forwards Peyton Anderson & 2025 5th round pick Vanessa Upson, and defenders Madison Bizal and 2025 6th round pick Brooke Becker to the main roster. In addition, they signed forwards Élizabeth Giguѐre, Kaitlyn O’Donohoe, as well as 4th round draft pick Ana Rinker to their reserve player list.

The Minnesota Frost open their season Friday night with a banner raising ceremony at home at 6:00 PM Central vs the Toronto Sceptres.

Boston Fleet

The Boston Fleet made four cuts to their roster on Wednesday leading up to the deadline, releasing forwards Chloé Aurard-Bushee & veteran Kelly Babstock, as well as blue liner Olivia Muhn and goaltender Kaitlyn Ross. Earlier in the week, forward Julia Nearis and defender Julia Shaunessy were cut from the roster.

The Fleet have a new leadership group with the departure of now Seattle Torrent Captain Hilary Knight in Megan Keller, along with forward Alina Müller and stalwart Jamie Lee Rattray. The Fleet have perhaps the biggest hill to climb with the changes this offseason, but backstopped by veteran Aeren Frankel in net, and with newcomer and 2nd overall pick defender Haley Winn, the Fleet could surprise people this season.

The Fleet signed 2025 draft pick forwards Abby Newhook (sister of NHL’er Alex Newhook) and Olivia Mobley, along with defender Riley Brengman & netminder Amanda Thiele to their main roster. Their reserve roster currently consists of forward veteran Loren Gabel and defenders Mia Biotti & Olivia Zafuto.

NY Sirens

The NY Sirens had a flurry of activity leading up to the 2025-26 season, with several contract signings and roster moves. The most important move was finally signing 2025 PWHL Draft 3rd overall pick Casey O’Brien to a one year deal on Tuesday. The forward was the last remaining first round pick to sign. They also signed remaining draft picks on the roster including forwards Maddi Wheeler, Anna Bargman, and goaltender Kaley Doyle.

In addition, they extended newly named Assistant Captain, founding Sirens player, and defender Jaime Bourbonnais as well as goaltender Kayle Osborne to one year contract extensions. This locks Bourbonnais in through 2026-27, and Osborne in through 2027-28. Both are seen by GM Pascal Daost as key pieces in their retooling effort this season. Osborne played under Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo at Colgate, noting that he believes in her and “excited to see where she can push it because she’s a great Puck stopper…and her puck play is world class.”

The Sirens also signed players to their reserve list, adding defenders Olivia Knowles and Nicole Vallario, a training camp standout. Vallario will start the season on the main roster due to an injury to 2025 draft pick Dayle Ross who will begin the season on LTIR. Sarah Fillier was named to the other Assistant Captain role alongside Bourbonnais.

The Sirens begin their season on Saturday on the road in Ottawa vs the Charge at 7:00 PM Eastern.

The team has been slowly but surely building around their stars with depth players, working out options in two pre-season scrimmages with the other expansion team, the Vancouver Goldeneyes, earning a split decision in the two contests. In the last days forward Olivia Wallin who played in one scrimmage, scoring a goal for the Torrent, and defender Lily Yovetich who played in both scrimmages were released from camp. Following the end of training camp, they signed forwards Lily Delianedis, Brooke Bryant & Marah Wagner in addition to defenders Anna Wilgren and Lyndie Lobdell. The Torrent reserve players to begin their season will be defender Emily Zumwinkle (sister of Frost forward Grace Zumwinkle) and forwards Jada Habisch & Sydney Langseth.
