Kampf Terminating? Tanev IR; Leafs vs Pens

The Toronto Maple Leafs put forth their best effort on the road in a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, but in the process lost defenseman Chris Tanev to a suspected concussion in the third period. Tanev collapsed to the ice after what seemed to be a rather innocuous hit from Flyers forward Matvei Michkov, and as a precautionary measure was stretchered off the ice.

The Leafs reported on Sunday that Tanev was taken to a local Philadelphia hospital and stayed overnight to be evaluated, but was discharged and is returning to Toronto. The veteran blueliner was placed on injured reserve for the second time in two weeks and Dakota Mermis was recalled from the AHL Toronto Marlies.

The fact that Tanev suffered the same injury in the first game back after missing 10 days following a collision with Dawson Mercer has to have a chilling effect on the Leafs, as the veteran righty is the most valuable defenseman on the club, playing as a primary shutdown defender and penalty killer. It is likely that Philippe Myers will step in for Tanev in the lineup, as Toronto takes on Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Scotiabank Arena.

The Leafs seemed to find some good chemistry with some revamped line combinations, as Nick Robertson played effectively on a line with Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews, and Easton Cowan was a good fit with John Tavares, scoring his first NHL goal. It is expected that Anthony Stolarz will make his 10th start of the season.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicated on HNIC’s Saturday Headlines and furthering his reporting on Monday’s 32 Thoughts podcast that center David Kampf sat out both weekend games in Chicago from the AHL Marlies and is contemplating his hockey future. Kampf cleared waivers last month and has one assist in four games with the Marlies, but had been rumored to be someone that Leafs GM Brad Treliving has been trying to trade since the summer.

The complicating factor is Kampf’s contract, as the 30-year-old has another year left on his four-year deal signed in 2023 at a $2.4 million AAV. The Leafs are likely not interested in retaining salary to deal the veteran with another year on it, and according to Friedman players with the Marlies were under the impression based on what Kampf told them that he was going to terminate his contract.

This would likely be beneficial for Kampf to find an NHL home for this season, as teams are more likely to take a chance on a veteran depth center for the remainder of the season. If a termination does take place, Kampf’s name will be placed on waivers for the purpose of mutual termination over the next few days.
