Knies And Domi’s Deuce, Leafs vs. Columbus

Unlike the first two back-to-backs in October, the Toronto Maple Leafs began their third of the month on a winning note, as Matthew Knies and Max Domi each scored a pair of goals in a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday. The Leafs fell behind twice, but Domi erased an early Calgary goal from Morgan Frost, and Knies quickly responded before the end of the second with the equalizer after Joel Farabee scored his first of the season.

Knies put Toronto into the lead with a power play goal early in the third, but a bad Morgan Rielly giveaway resulted in Samuel Honzek tying the game with 5:11 left. Playing on the wing with a shift with Knies and John Tavares, Domi snapped a shot far side past Dustin Wolf with 2:04 remaining to give the Leafs their fifth victory of the season.

“(Domi has) been good. I mean, Max, for me, the last three games have been a different player.” Leafs head coach Craig Berube said after the win.  “Like you talk about, (he was) just more engaged. And when he’s an engaged player, he’s a good player.”

Knies has been more of a setup man early in the season (2nd on the team in assists with nine) after scoring 29 goals last season, but the Leafs will need him to keep up his goal-scoring pace to supplement snipers like William Nylander and Auston Matthews.

Anthony Stolarz earned his third win of the season with the 29-save effort, and backup Cayden Primeau will be looking to stay undefeated in the NHL’s only game after the 16-game Frozen Frenzy had all 32 clubs in action, as the Leafs take on the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

The Blue Jackets are coming off a 4-3 overtime victory over the Buffalo Sabres, as they came back from a 3-2 deficit, tying the game late in the third and getting the OT winner from Miles Wood. Jett Greaves was in net for Columbus, so the Leafs will be facing Elvis Merzlikins in the contest.
