Leafs Need To Keep The Home Fires Burning

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue their four-game homestand on Wednesday against the Utah Mammoth. The Leafs are 6-2-1 at Scotiabank Arena and 2-0 in November, with a pair of totally divergent performances against Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Against the Flyers, Toronto responded from an early deficit and dominated Philadelphia for most of the contest. Against Pittsburgh, the club took the first 40 minutes off and rallied from a three-goal hole with four third-period goals.

The Mammoth are playing the second of back-to-back games, winning 2-1 in Buffalo on Tuesday on a Clayton Keller overtime goal. Utah had starter Karel Vejmelka in goal, so the Leafs will face backup Vitek Vanecek. Both Brandon Carlo and Anthony Stolarz and Brandon Carlo were absent from practice on Tuesday for maintenance purposes, but both are expected to play.

The Leafs schedule will allow them to use Stolarz for the next two starts against Utah and Boston on Saturday, but with a home back-to-back on the weekend against Carolina on Sunday, Toronto will have to use Cayden Primeau or call up Dannis Hildeby from the AHL, since Joseph Woll is working his way back from a leave of absence.

One notable change at practice on Tuesday was Oliver Ekman-Larsson quarterbacking the first power play unit, switching units with Morgan Rielly. Rielly has nine points this season, but all nine are at even strength. Ekman-Larsson, who was an excellent point man earlier in his career with Arizona, may provide a spark to the first unit, who are currently ranked 30th in the NHL at 12.1%. Another was head coach Craig Berube keeping the line of Matthew Knies, Auston Matthews, and William Nylander together, after they scored three goals to tie the game on Monday. Based on line rushes on Tuesday,  Steven Lorentz could return to the lineup and center Scott Laughton could make his first start of the season.
