Leafs, Panthers In Battle Of The Tanks

If we are discussing a tank battle in military historical circles, you would be comparing the German Tiger tank, used to great effect on the Eastern Front during World War II against the Russian T-34 or on the Western Front against the smaller but mass-produced American Sherman tank, but what will be taking place on Saturday night in Toronto will not be the hockey equivalent of Kursk or the Battle of the Bulge, but a display of two clubs playing out the string of a season they’d like to forget, and attempting to salvage something positive out of an 82-game disaster.

The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs got to the same place in very different manners, but are tied for sixth from the bottom in the NHL standings entering the final week of the campaign. The winner of tonight’s contest will actually be the loser, as two points will all but eliminate any chance of finishing in the bottom five in a strong 2026 Draft, while the loser will still have an opportunity depending on how they do in the final two games on their schedule.

The Panthers have been decimated by injuries this season, starting with the loss of team captain Aleksander Barkov, and not having winger Matthew Tkachuk, but the club has shut down most of their veterans in the last two weeks, since their 2026 first-round pick, traded to Chicago in the Spencer Knight – Seth Jones deal last March, is top-10 protected. The Leafs have had their share of injuries, but the cause for their decline and fall has been multi-layered, including inept roster management from former GM Brad Treliving, to the bungled strategies of head coach Craig Berube, to an inconsistent and at times baffling on-ice performance from most of the veterans.

The More Effective Tank

There is little doubt what the Panthers are doing. In their 5-1 loss to Ottawa on Thursday, they had only nine players who played in the Stanley Cup Final against Edmonton 10 months ago, so their lineup pretty much mimics a pre-season game roster. Toronto should follow suit in this race to the bottom, as most of their right-thinking fanbase are rooting for the Leafs to lose and lose often. Unfortunately, Berube, who is undoubtedly coaching his final week behind the Toronto bench, is not one of them.

Even with as full a roster as they can muster, the Leafs put in a pathetic effort in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders on Thursday, and in their final two games against Dallas and Ottawa, they play teams that have something at stake in terms of locking up home-ice advantage or a playoff berth. Saturday’s contest will be a battle of who can dress the worst lineup and steer the ship into the iceberg more effectively. An analogy that is perfect for this season, since it ends on the 114th anniversary of the Titanic sinking.
